But when you try to sell your phone, you have to revert the root to claim the best price. You might even be bored with the new tweaks and mods, tempting you to get your smartphone as it was before rooting. There are majorly a few ways that can help you get your phone back in the normal state. Follow the guide below to unroot your Android smartphone and get it back on stock (even if you are not tech-savvy):
Restore NANdroid Backup
Taking a NANdroid backup is the quickest and easiest way to get your Android phone back on track. A NANdroid backup will bring you a digital copy of all the stored data inside your device’s NAND flash memory and will help you use the aftermarket distributions of your Android OS or ROM. It might lead you to lose some data. But users who had an updated OS can start unrooting without losing anything from the device.
Since this is a full system backup created in the recovery, you have to create a NANdroid backup every time you flash a new ROM or install any mod. It will create an entire snapshot of your device, including the operating system, data, apps, files, and more. So, when you start restoring it, it will restore the ROM before getting into this procedure. Note that you will also need the backup you took while using the ROM. This lengthy procedure is only short-term that will help you return to stock.
Follow these steps to restore a NANdroid backup:
- Start by booting your phone into your custom recovery.
- Select Restore to check the list of all the available backups.
- Choose a backup that is created with the stock ROM.
- Tick mark the boxes of the partitions you want to restore. It is best if you do it on all the boxes.
- Now, swipe the ‘Swipe to Restore’ label.
The last step will take a few minutes to process and complete. You can now reboot your device where you have been redirected to the stock ROM. Now, open the SuperSU app on your phone and navigate to the Settings tab. Then, select Full Unroot and then reboot your device once more. After it switches on, your device will be unrooted.
Flash A Factory Image
Flashing the factory image can also get your device to the original stock. This method will revert your phone to its original state. You will have to start with bootloader locking. The device manufacturers typically introduce factory images, but all the companies don’t participate in this procedure. So, if you use Samsung or LG devices, you’ll have to download the factory images from a third-party site. The steps to this method vary from device to device. But if you use Google Pixel, these are the steps you need to follow:
Install and set up the ADB and Fastboot tools on the device.
- Now from the Android’s website, download the factory image. You can unzip the download on your desktop.
- Then, connect your phone using a USB and boot it into Fastboot mode.
- Launch the Command Prompt or Terminal app (based on the device you use).
- After opening the command prompt, (Windows users) run flash-all.bat; (macOS or Linux users) run flash-all.sh.
- Wait for the process to complete and then reboot the device.
That will take you to stock, unrooted ROM, with stock recovery as well. Lock the bootloader, and your device will be completely back to normal.
Flash A Stock ROM
You can also try flashing a stock ROM, but it has its fair share of troubles and inconvenience as you have to take backups and restore the Android data before moving ahead. But it will help you get a stock ROM. So, your first step should be to find a pre-rooted version of ROM. You might even experience some obstacles in the process if your device doesn’t have an active community on the XDA Developers Forum. You can try downloading a flashable stock ROM directly from your device’s company’s website.
Follow these steps to flash a stock ROM quickly:
- Find a stock ROM for your phone and visit the XDA Developers forums and locate the forum for your device.
- Download the ROM on your phone and take a backup of all your data.
- Boot into recovery, and select ‘Wipe to Factory Reset’ on your phone. Use this option only if you don’t want to take backup and restore.
- From the recovery home screen, select Install and go to the stock ROM you downloaded.
- Now, swipe the bar to start the installation process.
- Reboot your device once the procedure is complete.
Do not make any changes after downloading a pre-rooted stock ROM. But if you used a non-rooted ROM and want to get the original stock, you will have to re-lock the bootloader, which will wipe your phone.
Use either of these methods to unroot your Android device easily. Steps might vary based on the device brand you use.
