Insights from Recruitment at Lizard

The Lizard Centre

In my year of working with Lizard as a recruiter, I have seen many bright candidates develop careers in ABA and Behaviour Therapy. Although I had come from a corporate background with limited knowledge of ABA, it was wonderful to learn about the industry, and to see the positive effects that good therapy can have. I have greatly enjoyed my opportunity to recruit for Lizard Behaviour Therapists to help all of our diverse clients.

Behaviour Therapists have a particular skillset, but it is also much more diverse than any other role I’ve recruited for. All sorts of people see a calling in helping others, and at Lizard we are always excited to see people with a passion for this type of work. I have seen people with many different skillsets excel by putting their past experiences to use. This makes the interview process a lot more interesting than in a corporate environment.

Are there any qualities which make an exceptional candidate? For behaviour therapists, a dedication and enthusiasm for the role is always the best sign. Candidates who come in wanting to make a difference for the children they work with, will naturally seek to better themselves and do everything it takes to support their clients. It’s good to also have qualities like empathy, creativity, determination and energy, but consistently the most successful candidates are those who can motivate themselves with a passion for what they do. This passion can be seen everywhere from the initial phone call, to our training workshops.

People have various motivations for wanting to become one of our therapists. Often, we receive candidates looking for practical, hands-on experience. In the behaviour therapy sector, particularly in Australia, many roles and organisations are looking for candidates who have some experience. What could be a better way to gain this than to work with people in the field, and see how behaviour therapy is done? All of our behaviour therapists are given comprehensive training in ABA, lots of hands on experience with all kinds of clients, and the satisfaction of knowing your work makes a difference. It’s no surprise that many of our Behaviour Therapists stay for a long time – maybe longer than they initially expected!

So if you would qualify yourself as someone passionate for making a difference, especially for children, ask yourself if you can also offer these qualities:

  • Energy and creativity to engage children through fun and play
  • Empathy for clients and their loved ones
  • Determination and perseverance even when challenges arise
