How to Make Cannabis Coconut Oil At Home

Mature cannabis plant

Cannabis is one of the most popular medicinal herbs whose history of human use dates back to more than 2,500 years ago. One of the most admirable things about cannabis extracts is that there are numerous ways to consume them.

You can vape cannabis-based e-juices, smoke-up dried cannabis herbs, or administer cannabis oil tinctures sublingually. You might also choose to consume cannabis-infused edibles, swallow encapsulated cannabis products, or topically apply cannabis-enriched ointments.

Over the years, edibles and topicals have emerged as some of the most preferred ways to consume cannabis. That’s primarily because users can administer these substances seamlessly without drawing undue attention to themselves.

Cannabis coconut oil is one of the many ways to consume cannabis. You can either administer the oil orally or topically. This article shall offer more insights on how to make cannabis coconut oil at home.

Why Should You Consume Cannabis Coconut Oil?

The main reason why you should consider consuming cannabis coconut oil is that you get to synergize the health benefits of both coconut and cannabis.

Studies have proven that consuming coconut from time to time might help in the following ways;

  • Improving digestion through its abundance of dietary fiber
  • Reducing the risks of obesity by lowering belly fat
  • Regulating blood sugar level, hence guarding against heart and cardiovascular diseases
  • Boosting your immunity through powerful phenolic compounds like caffeic acid, gallic acid, and p-coumaric acid

Cannabis also comes with a cocktail of health benefits. The substance is mostly used to treat pain and anxiety. It can also help with inflammatory conditions, nausea, and insomnia.

Secondly, coconut oil has been shown to enhance the bioavailability of the cannabinoids in a cannabis product. That’s due to its relatively high concentration of saturated fats, which stands at more than 80%. Researchers believe that the high concentration of fatty acids in coconut oil offers a perfect medium through which cannabinoids enter your bloodstream.

Another benefit of cannabis coconut oil is that most cannabis strains, including indica and lab tested autoflower seeds, enhance the flavor of coconut oil. That’s particularly true for virgin coconut oil that hasn’t been contaminated with artificial flavor-enhancers.

You might also consider cannabis coconut oil if you prefer applying cannabis topically since coconut oil remains solid at room temperature. The fact that coconut oil stays solid at room temperature also makes it easy to store in gelatin capsules, which happens to be another popular way to consume cannabis products.

Last but not least, it’s incredibly easy to make cannabis coconut oil. You can prepare the oil at home and save a few hundred bucks that you’d otherwise incur on industrially-prepared cannabis products.

How to Make Cannabis Coconut Oil At Home

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup (7 – 10 grams) of dried cannabis extracts
  • 1 cup of unrefined/virgin coconut oil
  • Cheesecloth or a metal strainer/sieve
  • A bowl or cup for measuring
  • A bowl or jar for storing the cannabis coconut oil
  • A grinder (avoid blenders or juicers as they can affect the overall taste of the oil)
  • A slow cooker, saucepan, or double boiler

Directions

  1. Grind your cannabis plant. The best parts of the cannabis plant to use are the leaves, flowers, or buds. You might also choose to grind both parts. Just be sure not to over-grind to minimize the particles that pass through your strainer.
  2. Combine the ground cannabis powder with coconut oil in a double boiler, saucepan, or slow heater, and heat the mixture on low-to-moderate heat for a few hours.

This process is necessary as it allows for the decarboxylation of cannabis, which subsequently activates the psychoactive cannabis compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), without destroying all the other ingredients.

  • If you’re simmering the mixture on a slow heater, keep the average cook time between 4 and 6 hours and occasionally stir.
  • For a double-boiler, cook on low heat for 6 – 8 hours, also stirring occasionally.
  • And if you’re using a saucepan, cook on low heat for between 2 and 3 hours, frequently stir to avoid destroying the active ingredients through scorching.

Whatever cooking method you choose, always keep the temperature below 245 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. Occasionally add a small amount of water to prevent burning.
  2. When done, strain the oil using a sieve placed over a large measuring cup.

When straining, avoid squeezing the cheesecloth as that will only choke the oil with more chlorophyll.

  1. Discard the remaining plant matter or reuse them in your other homemade dishes.
  2. Allow your cannabis coconut oil to cool.
  3. Store the oil.
  4. Use the oil as required.

*Note that cannabis coconut oil has a shelf life of at least two months, which could be prolonged by refrigeration.

There are numerous ways to consume cannabis coconut oil. You can combine it with aloe and beeswax to make a cannabis-based ointment. You can also use the oil as a replacement for your regular cooking oil.

Other ways you can consume cannabis coconut oil include;

  • Formulating it into capsules
  • Preparing cannabis-infused tea latte
  • Making sex lubricant
