Horror Anime has been the most successful genre after Shonen. They help one confront the wildest nightmares with the twists and turns exclusive only to anime. Although there is no dearth of horror movies and TV shows, anime is different. While some of them achieve worldwide recognition and fame, some end up forgotten and neglected. Today we look at some of the best horror anime that have been lost in obscurity for too long but deserved to get more popularity and success.

Mononoke

Made by Toei Animation, Mononoke recounts the story of a nameless character who is known as the Medicine Seller. Mononoke is an evil spirit that clings itself to negative feelings. The Medicine Seller used to hound Mononoke, but it was not easy to get rid of; to exorcise it, it was essential to know its motivation of existence, its truth, and its shape. Only when the Medicine Seller is aware of these facts, he can finally exorcise the spirit using his sword. It takes him over 12 episodes to understand the true nature of Mononoke.

The show got a lot of appreciation for its animation. Its use of color and the surreal depiction of the events is breathtaking. It is only because of this the ghosts appear otherworldly, and the series has a unique atmosphere that helps it stand apart from others.

 Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories

Yamishibai has been running for more than seven seasons now. First released in 2013, the show tries to copy the kamishibai storytelling, in which a narrator recounts a story in a street performance using hand-illustrated boards. Kamishibai is crucial for the show since it is the central framing device. Almost all of the episode begins with a performance in which a masked kamishibai narrator tells a group of children stories focused on horror and monsters. Each of its episodes lasts for a few minutes and explores ghosts’ stories from different Japanese urban legends.

Since Crunchyroll has all the seasons of the show, Yamishibai is a fun watch and is an excellent way of exploring some of Japan’s urban legends. If you like horror anime, then there are very few shows that are as good as Yamishibai. The show is so spooky that by the time you will be done with it, you are bound to be haunted by at least one episode in the weeks to come.

 Gregory Horror Show

In recent times, because of some well-known streamers, The Gregory Horror Show has been getting a lot of attention. Its resurgence is surprising, but very few people know that the game is based on an anime. The show was broadcasted back from 1999 to 2003 by TV Asahi, and it went on to have three main series. The first two series are set in a hotel where the guests lose sanity because of odd events that happen there. But the final series is a bit different from the other two. It takes us on a journey in a mysterious train in which Gregory explores his deep-rooted desires and origins while he tries to get out of the train.

The show’s animation is unique, and every character looks like a papercraft doll. While the CGI is outdated, it somehow manages to create an unsettling atmosphere, making the show even more spooky. However, the show overall is not as horrifying as others on the list, but it leaves a long-lasting impression on the viewer with its unique characters.

Le Portrait De Petit Cossette

The three-episode series follows the story of Eiri Kurahashi, a young art student. Once, he is perplexed by a young girl’s image in a glass that appears to be moving and alive. He falls in love with her only to find out that her soul is trapped in the glass, and she will only be freed when someone takes the punishment that her killer deserved. What follows is a violent and suicidal journey in which Cossette (the girl in the glass) manipulates Eiri to go through unbelievable horrors while those around him try to protect him. It is a disconcerting tale of revenge and obsession, which gets more violent with time. The animation is made better by Yuki Kajiura’s fantastic soundtrack, which is one of the show’s highlights. It is one of a kind and a must-watch for all horror anime fans.

These four-horror anime are the most underrated series that every fan must watch. All of them are captivating and have the potential to entertain the fans to the fullest. There are very few shows or anime series that are as frightening as them, but unfortunately, they did not get the attention they deserve. Don’t forget to look them up; they won’t disappoint.
