Types of OSSD Courses in Various Educational Academies

If your child is unable to finish high school because you are moving to Ontario, you may want to enrol them in an international school that offers OSSD courses. That way, they can continue their education and earn the right credits to qualify in any North American university later on. Reputable schools offering OSSD programs in Ontario will provide your child with a high school diploma in Canada.

OSSD stands for ‘Ontario Secondary School Diploma,’ and it can allow your child to study in any college or university in Canada, USA, or abroad. Students in this program have the chance to acquire essential requirements. Reputable schools offering OSSD in Canada offer various courses, which are taught in an independent learning environment to help students build on their organizational, life, and social skills, time management, self-confidence, and self-discipline.

Students enrolled in OSSD high school courses should earn compulsory credits in these subjects:

  • Mathematics – 3 credits and at least one credit is provided in Grade 11 or 12.
  • First language: French or English – From Grades 9 to 12. That’s one credit each year.
  • Canadian History – 1 credit in 10th Grade.
  • Science – 2 credits from Grades 9 to 10.
  • Arts – 1 credit
  • Second language: English or French – 1 credit
  • Health and Physical Education – 1 credit
  • Canadian Geography – 1 credit in Grade 9
  • Career Studies – 0.5 credits in 10th Grade
  • Civics – 0.5 credits in Grade 10.

OSSD also covers certain areas to provide one additional credit for each course. For example, additional credit would be provided for a second language, classical or international language, humanities, aboriginal language, Canadian studies, or world studies. Career guidance and education are also provided. Extra credit for OSSD courses can also come with computer studies, cooperative education, or technological education in Grade 11 or 12.

Be sure to choose the right OSSD high school that can provide your child with a better opportunity to complete their schooling and prepare them for a good future. The school can evaluate your child’s courses that were accomplished in the previous country of study to check if any of them can be credited, transferred, and considered for OSSD in Canada.
