Effective API Management: 5 Steps

From checking in for your flight or finding out if your Uber has arrived, or just messaging a friend, an API has made that process possible. APIs or application programming interfaces—are the reason why these apps run. They are sets of defined rules that determine how an application can talk to another, making ready-made and universal access to whatever functionality a company or organization needs to deliver. That said, it’s important that you have an API of your own to drive the marketing and sales goals of your firm. Here are a few ways to ensure the effective management of your APIs.

Choose the Right Platform

You’ll need to use a platform that can use API. Is it scalable, though? Make sure it is. When your operations expand, you want to make sure that the platform can easily adapt and handle the growing needs of your business. Check to make sure that the platform offers a secure and lightweight gateway for your APIs. Don’t forget to check for the run-time capabilities of the system. What kind of support does the vendor offer? Find out before you pick that one out of the many API management tools out there.

Ask About Security

It’s important that there’s a way to exposed back-end systems to public IP access securely and without compromising flexibility. You can make this possible, though, by using HTTPS and API keys from the device. You’ll also need a secure and safe VPN connection to make this work.

Use APIs Again

When it comes to APIs, you’ll want to reuse yours across multiple projects. That will cut down on the development time by a mile. If you want to get apps to the market as soon as possible—and that’s usually the goal since that means you can start seeing some profit—then start reusing those APIs. You’ll want to create or have APIs built with this in mind as well. That way, you’ll get to reuse more APIs in the future.

Manage Performance

Apps serve thousands to millions of users these days, with mission-critical applications that run simultaneously. This leads to heavy demand for and to the back-end systems. The systems, in turn, must communicate with the mobile app network before it can proceed any further. Using an API-based service approach, though, is an excellent workaround as it handles the caching as well as performance management. It can also respond to requests.

Think About the Cost

When you look for ways to improve how you manage your APIs, make sure you always keep your budget in mind. Cost and efficiency must always come hand-in-hand. You’ll want to consider a range of options. However, being on a budget doesn’t mean that you’ll want to opt for the cheapest option possible. Instead, think about value. Which option will give you the best value for your money? That’s the right question to ask. That’s also going to help you figure out other ways that you can use to manage the APIs effectively to meet the demands of your organization.
