The Cloud Matsuri is back with a virtual convention for anime and manga fans. As you have already guessed, the horror maestro Junji Ito is returning to the world of horror with his unsettling horror manga series “Uzumaki.” The new anime adaptation will be animated by Drive and co-produced by Production I.G USA and Adult Swim.

Here is everything you need to know about the new Adult Swim Uzumaki anime adaptation and Cloud Matsuri.

The Uzumaki manga is one of the finest works of Japanese horror Mangaka, Junji Ito. Unlike his other horror mangas like the Army Of One, The Licking Woman, and The Human Chair, which are considered extremely gruesome and the epitome of body horror, Uzumaki is more psychological and unearthly than any of Junji Ito’s work.

In the manga, Kurôzu-Cho, a fictional town in Japan, transforms into a weird and minacious place, engulfing people into spirals. The story revolves around Kirie and her boyfriend, Shuichi. As they try to uncover the town’s secrets, the townspeople become obsessed with the spiral curses, which pushes them to insanity and ultimately leads them to a gruesome death. As easy as it sounds, the manga, however, doesn’t hold back in terms of brutality and psychological horror that is hard to comprehend and impossible to explain.

Adult Swim’s Toonami will be the one premiering the anime adaption, which is animated in monochrome and doesn’t have any colors in it, except for black and white.

Although Adult Swim, Production I.G USA, and Junji Ito are yet to provide any factual information about the exact release date of anime adaption, fans can expect the release date in the next year on Toonami.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, several studios and directors tried their hand at the anime and live-action adaptations of Junji Ito’s Mangas. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t receive the same love and appreciation as the original comic.

The most recent anime adaptation was the 2018 Junji Ito Collection. Despite all the efforts, it didn’t receive the same love as the original manga. According to fans, the anime didn’t have the same aesthetic art style: the USP of Junji Ito manga.

In the 2000’s era, Uzumaki was adapted into a live-action movie, and with the limited technology at hand and lousy CGI effects, the movie didn’t live up to the hype. It was criticized for its weird and absurd looking special effects, which was funny instead of fearsome, and over-the-top acting skills made the movie a complete flop.

However, the crowd is hyped for the new Uzumaki anime adaptation as the trailer looks sick, and we can hope that Adult Swim will soon premier the first episode of this one of a kind horror tale of spirals by Junji Ito.
