Cyanoacrylate glue in normal parlance refers to what is known as ‘Super glue’. It is named as such for its ability to effectively bond any substance from metal to plastic including even the human skin. However, for this super bonding to take place it is very essential for the surface to have some amount of moisture present on it.

Applications of Cyanoacrylate Adhesives

Classification of cyanoacrylate glue is based either on its viscosity formula or the application it caters to. Accordingly you have an adhesive with high, medium and low viscosity formulas or as per the later classification you have one for medical applications, another for metals, a third for plastic and rubber and so on. Following are some of its industrial applications:

Electronics

The super metal bonding property of cyanoacrylates makes them the best choice for assembling prototypes in electronic industry. It is a favorite among individuals with a passion for making miniatures or prototype models.

Aquascaping

Marine and freshwater aquariums find cyanoacrylate adhesives highly useful in attaching live plant rhizomes to stone or wood pieces. Enthusiasts in this field use the glue for coral fragmenting as this can go direct into the tank without causing any harm.

Aircraft

Cyanoacrylate adhesive is used in several ways in the aircraft industry. It acts as strong yet lightweight bonding filler when it is combined with baking soda. Parts made of polystyrene foam, an essential substance needed by aircraft modelers can be repaired or assembled using this adhesive combination.

Forensics

It becomes an important forensic tool by helping to catch fingerprints concealed on non-porous items like plastic, glass and so on. One needs to follow a specific process that enables fingerprints which are invisible to the naked eye to be recorded for further use.

Woodwork

The woodwork industry has a number of applications for cyanoacrylate glues. When combined with sawdust it helps to close cracks and gaps. Wood furniture and wood instrument industry use this method often for repair work. Piano soundboards can also be repaired in this fashion.

Medical Field

Earlier applications of cyanoacrylate glue relate to fixing the shell, hide or bones of tortoises. The adhesive has been successfully used as a medical adhesive. Closing wounds of injured soldiers, reducing chances of infection and enhancing cosmetic appearance of the skin are some of the areas where its use is prevalent. It helps to heal damage caused to skin on the fingertips of rock climbers and forms an essential part of their first aid kit. Certain variations of the glue have proved highly useful for specific medical applications.

Cosmetology

Cyanoacrylate adhesive is a part of artificial eyelashes kit or nail enhancement kits. It helps to glue the artificial eyelash or nail extensions effectively.

Sports

Another application where the adhesive proves highly useful is in the sport of archery. Fletching can be glued to arrow shafts effectively with the aid of this adhesive. The adhesive comes in the form of tubes with slim, elongated nozzles that helps in precise application of the glue to the fletching base for more effective bonding.
