Margot Robbie Hints ‘Girl Power’ In The Next Pirates of the Caribbean Movie

Actress Margot Robbie shared some information about the new Pirates of the Caribbean film and teased the franchise, hinting at the strong girl power element. The team of the film announced the involvement of Robbie in the upcoming film in June this year. And the next Pirates of the Caribbean film will be different from the core movies focusing on the new characters and plots.

The fantasy series Pirates of the Caribbean is based on the theme park attraction of the same name created by Walt Disney. The series is one of the important components of the Disney media franchise. It consists of five films directed and written by different directors and writers. The first movie of the franchise was released in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It was a great box office success and praised by both critics and audience. After the huge collection, Walt Disney revealed that they are working on the second installment. However, the franchise gradually lost its quality of art and creation.

Before releasing the fifth installment, Disney announced that the fifth and sixth film would be back-to-back films. Kaya Scodelario was signed for the sixth film in October 2017. After that, the franchise did not talk about the project’s status till May 2020; there were reports that the team is considering Karen Gillan for the lead of the reboot. Disney announced Christina Hodson as the screenplay writer and Margot Robbie as the leading lady in June 2020.

Margot Robbie is famous for her role as Harley Quinn in the 2020 movie Birds of Prey. The Australian actress received nominations for five BAFTA Awards and two Academy Awards. She also featured among the 100 most influential people in the world, published by Time in 2017. And in 2019, the actress was ranked among the world’s highest-paid actresses.

Robbie studied at Somerset College and began her career with independent Australian films. She got her breakthrough in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 black comedy movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Later the Oscar-nominated actress featured in the biopic, I, Tonya, period drama Mary Queen of Scots, and comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The franchise of Pirates of the Caribbean is going through a tough transition phase as the iconic character Jack Sparrow’s actor Johnny Depp is reportedly out of the franchise. Fans of the film series and Depp are very upset with the news. Pirates of the Caribbean is known for Depp’s Sparrow, and no one could imagine the movie without him.

Disney is planning to make as much profit out of the landmark franchise, and hence the studio is working on two films, including Robbie, and Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin write the script; the two co-wrote the screenplay of the first four films.

During an interview with Collider, Robbie talked about her recent collaboration. When Hodson asked her what to expect from her upcoming Pirates movie, the actress jokingly said “a lot of girl power,” and then she added that she could not reveal much about the movie as the project is in a very early stage. However, she shared that the franchise is finally adding some powerful female elements to the film series. The team is searching for a producer, and all she could do is sit back and wait for the script to be produced.

Robbie said that the project is in its initial stage, but she appreciated that the host is excited about the combo. She loved the work of Christina. Although she is not the film producer, she would sit back and wait for the whole procedure to complete. And the whole team is very excited, adding the female element to the Pirates world.

However, Robbie’s statement about the female element seems a little strange. The franchise has its fair amount of strong female characters. Kaya Scodelario and Keira Knightley are the most recent entries in Dead Men Tell No Tales. The character of Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley, is certainly the most proactive character and most interesting among the franchise’s female characters. Although the film series has hired a female writer for the first time, maybe Robbie was referring to that as “female element.”

The Australian actress also revealed that her character would be the film’s lead, which will be unique for the franchise. Previously, all the characters, including Elizabeth, were at the back seat of Depp’s Jack Sparrow.

Regardless of the female element and the girl power, hopefully, the actress-writer duo of Hodson and Robbie will pull off something fresh and exciting to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. And the sixth installment will remind its audience why it was a big hit in the first place besides Depp’s Sparrow.
