During the audition of the movie Run, actors lied about being disabled to fit in character. Aneesh Chaganty’s 2020 movie Run is an American thriller horror mystery movie. Chaganty also wrote the screenplay of the film with Sev Ohanian. The film stars Kiera Allen and Sarah Paulson. Run released digitally on 20 November 2020.

The plot revolves around a family where Diane (played by Sarah Paulson) delivers a premature daughter, Chloe, who is whisked away for emergency treatment. The medical screen then displays the diseases, including hemochromatosis, asthma, paralysis, heart arrhythmia, and diabetes.

After seventeen years, Chloe (played by Kiera Allen) uses a wheelchair and is chronically ill. She takes medications and is homeschooled by Diane. One day Chloe finds a bottle of green pills prescribed to Diane. She is suspicious about the pills labeled as “Trigoxin” Chloe peeled the sticker placed on the original sticker. She tried to search for the meds on-line, but the internet is disconnected; then the teenage girl tries to call someone for some more information about the pills. Chloe gets to know that Trigoxin is a red pill and used as a heart medication.

Chloe convinces her mother to see a film and eventually sneaks out during a bathroom break. She reaches a pharmacist and asks to look up Diane’s prescription. Chloe learns that green pills are a muscle relaxant for dogs, causing paralysis if ingested by humans. The rest of the plot tells her struggle story.

Filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty and his creative partner Natalie Qasabian and Sev Ohanian have worked together through creative limitations. The first movie they collaborated on was the 2018 film Searching. It stars Debra Messing and John Cho. The plot follows a father trying to find his 16-years-old daughter on smartphones and computers. The film was released on 31 August 2018 in the United States. It collected a gross of $75 million worldwide against a budget of $880,000. Searching received praises for its unpredictable storyline, direction, unique visual presentation, and acting. Actor John Cho was nominated for Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Chaganty’s Run was announced to be distributed and produced by Lionsgate in June 2018. Actress Sarah Paulson joined the cast in December 2018. The shooting of the movie started on 31 October 2018 and took 48 days to complete filming. The film was initially scheduled to be released back in May, but due to COVID-19, the studio changed the releasing platform and sold Hulu’s rights in August.

During an interview with MovieMaker, Qasabian, Chaganty, and Ohanian discuss the process of casting the second lead. They were very clear that they want an actor who uses a wheelchair. And during their online search, they found out how actors lie about being disabled to get an audition. They added, there were a few young ladies who submitted their profile as disabled. And they were like; these people are very talented. Then somebody looked them up on Instagram, and there were videos of them walking around on the beach for two hours.

After some tough searching, the team got their actress and right performer, Kiera Allen. She is a 20-year-old student at Columbia University who was only featured in a short film, fit the bill. Allen is an American actress and a Creative Writing student at Columbia University. The actress previously appeared in the 2017 off-Broadway show, Girl #2 by Bekah Brunstetter. She has been using a wheelchair since 2014.

The Run warned the young actress that the character would require a wide range of emotions and some severe physical stunt. In response, Allen sent a video of her training on an arm bike. The casting team and the filmmaker were very impressed with her determination and hired her for the role. The young American actress certainly proved her worth and received a lot of positive responses from critics.

Casting choices of films like Run are under much more research than they used to be. Filmmakers like Ohanian, Qasabian, and Chaganty embarrassed the extra creative work for authenticity and prioritized the lived experience to make good art and big-budget casting scandals for headlines.

On the other hand, TV and film actors usually have some lighthearted lie in their actor’s resumes but lying about having a disability went too far. Getting an acting job is not easy in the film business, but actors need to know the line between passion and desperation.
