Is Your Phone Compatible with Google Fi?

Many people might be unfamiliar with the term ‘Google Fi;’ therefore, it was a project launched under the name of ‘Project Fi’ in 2015. It is a service offered by Google that provides SMS, telephone calls, and mobile broadband by using Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Initially, Google Fi was only used by Nexus 6, but with time the company started adding its phones, including the Pixel devices, Nexus 5X, and 6P. Not only this, but Google phones bought from carriers can also be used with Google Fi after unlocking.

These phones are specially designed for Google Fi, which also refers to the fact that they can work with Google Fi’s VPN and default switching between three networks. Additionally, these phones can connect with over two million hotspots. Notably, Google Fi makes use of towers from T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular.

Apart from Google phones, Motorola devices are also designed for Fi, including the Moto G Power and Moto G Stylus. In case you want to check if your phone is compatible with Google Fi, you may check the same using Google Fi’s compatibility checker. The three green checkmarks will indicate full compatibility.

If you’re a Pixel 2 or any other latest Google phone user, you’ll get the added benefit of an eSIM that enables you to use Fi without a physical SIM. Talking about Pixel 3a and Pixel 4, it enables you to use a physical Google Fi SIM in addition to an eSIM for better network switching performance.

If you’ve been eagerly waiting for 5G phones to be compatible with Google Fi, now is the time as 5G is now used by network switching phones.

Phone’s Compatibility with Fi

Considering the unlocked phones, most of them are likely to work with Google FI; however, sometimes they might not work with certain features, like network switching. Such phones exclusively use the T-Mobile network. Additionally, you can see the coverage difference using Google Fi’s coverage map.

Android devices need to backup T-Mobile’s GSM network and should be running Android 7.0 or later. Calling and messaging over a Wi-Fi network will work with most Android phones, but Samsung phones will have to download the Messages app for the same.

Apple devices, including iPhone 5s and later, are compatible to work with Google Fi. Moreover, iPhone XR, XS, 11 series, and 12 series will also support eSIM. To use the same, make sure that you’ve updated your phone to iOS 11 or later. Notably, Apple devices will not be able to call or text using Wi-Fi but will have access to international data.

In simpler words, Google Fi is a convenient, prepaid network, no matter which device you use to work with the same. Though you’ll be getting additional benefits if you use a device specifically made for Fi, it is a huge thing that the network is open to all other devices supporting the same.
