Kenneth Branagh’s Star Powered “Murder on the Orient Express” Sequel

Kenneth Branagh will appear again on the big screen as Agatha Christie’s famous detective Hercule Poirot. The name of the sequel is “Death on the Nile.”

Branagh will also direct the movie, and he is in the mood to build further in the Hercule Poirot cinematic universe.  The trailer is already out on YouTube.

Academy Award Nominee Kenneth Branagh will return as director for another thriller based on Agatha Christie novel following up on the star-studded prequel “Murder on the Orient Express.” The prequel came out in 2017 and was well received by the critics as well as the audience at the box office.

The cast who have signed up for this film includes talents from both British and American cinema, and the film is expected to be another edge-of-seats whodunit thriller. Branagh has employed Michael Green once again. Green, who holds the pedigree for writing the screenplay for the prequel, has written the screenplay for “Death on the Nile” as well. It is a 20th Century Studios film, the trailer of which has been released.

Apart from helming the direction team, Branagh is also the leading actor of the film personifying Hercule Poirot once again. The rest of the star-powered cast includes Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot along with Letitia Wright, Armie Hammer, Anette Bening, Tom Bateman, Sophie Okonedo, Dawn French, Emma Mackey, Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie, Jennifer Saunders, and Russel Brand.

The plot of the film is based on Agatha Christie novel of the same name, and it involves Poirot investigating a crime scene in Egypt involving a murder which is resulted from a love triangle gone seriously wrong.  In 2017, Poirot did tease about creating a cinematic universe.

The legendary Agatha Christie is a world-renowned author. She, along with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had revolutionized the murder mystery genre in pre-modern times.

This is obviously not the first time that Christie’s novel has been adapted into a motion picture. It is not even the first time that the 1937 novel “Death on the Nile” has been adapted into a motion picture. In 1978, “Death on the Nile” was released which starred Bette Davis, Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, David Niven, and Maggie Smith. The novel was written into a screenplay by Anthony Shaffer and was directed by John Guillermin.

The prequel named “Murder on the Orient Express” also had star power in their cast. The cast included fan favorite and Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Derek Jacobi, Willem Dafoe, Olivia Colman, Leslie Odom, Jr, Lucy Boynton and of course Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot himself.

The film was budgeted on $55 million, and it was a worldwide success grossing $352 million.

The release date of “Death on the Nile” has been set to be October 20, 2020.

These are exciting times for Branagh although the film industry has been struggling ever since the lockdown was imposed in March of this year to curb the raging pandemic. Now, the virus is believed to be slowing down, and the Movies and TV industry are slowly but steadily getting back on its feet, ensuring all the necessary precautions.

Branagh along with “Death on the Nile” is also awaiting the release of one of the biggest films of 2020 “Tenet”. Christopher Nolan has directed the film in which he stars alongside Elizabeth Debicki, John David Washington and Robert Pattinson. The mind-bending film involving time inversion was expected to revive the industry in summer, but the release date had to be pushed ahead. However, the date which looks final has been set to September the 3rd 2020 (for the US) and August the 26th (for 70 international countries).

This will be the second time Branagh will be working with Nolan after having worked with the Academy Award nominee “Dunkirk”. The film was released in 2017 and had won many accolades both from the audience and from the critics.
