The public train transport system in Singapore is run by two companies: SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit. SMRT Corp serves millions of passengers daily by operating Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), public buses, and taxi services. It currently manages and operates metro trains in the North-South and East-West Lines, the Circle Line, the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit system, and Thomson-East Coast Line. Being the leading public transport operator in the country, SMRT’s responsibility is to provide safe, reliable, and customer-centric services. To provide greater convenience, safety, and comfort to commuters throughout their journeys, SMRT is working towards its vision - Zero Accident and Zero Security Breach.

How SMRT is Fulfilling Its Vision - Zero Accident and Zero Security Breach

  • SMRT has inculcated a safe work culture. Every employee, every driver, and every partner proactively participates in safety action plans. A survey conducted by Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council – CultureSAFE – revealed that 97% of participated employees were from SMRT Trains and Roads businesses.
  • The transport operator has created the Escalator Safety Committee to work on strategies that can help to reduce escalator injuries. As of March 2020, the committee has refurbished 37 escalators.
  • To create a safe work culture, SMRT has created e-learning options for workers, such as e-depot safety, track access safety, traffic safety, fire safety, and more.
  • The company has started multiple Kaizen projects to improve safety at workplaces. For instance, SMRT’s maintenance team has come up with Speed Tester for Train Traction Control Unit (TCU) Blower, which enables reliable speed testing on its Siemens train fleet.
  • It has collaborated with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and Singapore Police Force (SPF) to quickly respond to major incidents.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, SMRT has implemented safe management measures as well as disinfection procedures to ensure safe travel for commuters and workers.
  • The operator has created the Railway System Technical Committee to form standards for improving the reliability, safety, and productivity of its rail services.
  • Renewal of rail assets and replacing ageing trains and systems with new, advanced ones are some of the most important measures that the company is taking to protect the safety and health of the commuters and employees.  For instance, it has partnered with LTA to replace 2nd and 3rd generation trains in the NSEWL lines. SMRT is now using the Track Access Management System (TAMS) to optimise track access resources while enhancing safety.
