ASD Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behaviour. ASD is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviours.

The effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the severity of symptoms are different in each person. ASD disorder influences how an individual acts and interacts with others, communicates, and learns.

ASD is called a "spectrum" disorder because an individual with ASD can have a range of symptoms. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder might have issues talking with you, or they may not look you in the eye when you converse with them. They may also have limited interest and repetitive behaviour. They may spend a lot of time putting things in order, or they might say the same sentence again and again.

Some children with ASD disorder read early, but do not understand what they read, called hyperlexia Your autistic child might only eat specific food items. Child with autism dislikes anything lumpy or crunchy. Or, he/she may refuse to try new foods. He/she may do this to act out, or he/she dislikes the feel of various textures in her mouth.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong condition. You may not understand what caused it in your child. Some possible causes include severe infections, genetic problems that can cause brain damage. Examples are meningitis and encephalitis, problems during pregnancy. You might have an older child, cousin, or other family member with ASD Disorder.
