Winter and URTI/ Winter and Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Hello! I am a homemaker with a loving but rather demanding family under my care. I really don’t have the time to fall sick. Winter is my favourite season. The dipping temperatures bring along many winter joys like winter foods, family times and hot chocolate and of course the festive cheer with Christmas and the New Year. However winter also brings with it its share of health woes in the form of joint pains, sore throat, flu, cold and infections in the respiratory tract. Which is why my twin sister hates winters.

Her winters are usually stained by at least two bouts of upper respiratory tract infection. And that too after taking all the precautions, like avoiding crowded places, washing hands regularly, eating healthy, not sharing food or drink from the same plate or glass and not smoking. Despite all the care the cold winter air hampers her immune system and makes her susceptible to viral infections. One can get infected even by coming in contact with droplets released by sneezing or coughing by another infected person too.

The virus affects the upper respiratory tract that includes the nose and mouth, the nasal cavity, throat and the voice box. She usually ends up with a nasty sore throat, slight discomfort in breathing and a bit of a runny nose. I am constantly on the chat with her – advising her and giving her the much-needed TLC.

Thankfully this can be resolved at home. I make sure that she drinks a lot of warm fluids. Home remedies like Kaadhaas and herbal honey-ginger teas work really well.  I insist that she rests and stays away from others at her place. There are many over-the-counter medicines available to tackle the infection right at home. If her fever and infection lasts more than 3 days I push her to see the family doctor.

I, on the other hand, have managed to stay away from such nasty infections with lots of preventive home remedies and the curcumin-packed Curkey®. It is the quickest sore throat killer and also helps prevent upper respiratory tract infections and suits me great.
