Difference between Root Canal & Pulpotomy

Perfect teeth are what everyone prays for and not what every single being gets. When combined with an irregular brushing routine, the regular sugar consumption or junk intake causes the cavity to go beyond the mark where standard cleaning by a dentist does not yield any favorable results. Under such circumstances, root canals and pulpotomy are deemed the last attempts to save the tooth. Although the town is equipped with Emergency Dental Services, one should not be careless enough to take the mere cavity to a problematic phase where emergency dental care could not help.

While both treatments are put under the same dentist emergency section, a root canal procedure is slightly different from pulpotomy. Here, let us draw a line in between:

What separates a Root Canal from Pulpotomy?

  • Nothing but your improper food intake is responsible for tooth decay, which later damages and infects the pulp. While people at an adult age are given the root canal treatment, the pulpotomy is specifically performed on children. The former being more invasive is why a child’s treatment is subjected to the latter.
  • While pulpotomy includes removing the coronal pulp from the pulp chamber, commonly found in primary teeth, the root canal requires going right into the root where the bacteria have reached.
  • Root canal goes beyond the pulpotomy procedure, where the tooth is subjected to shaping, cleaning, and filling the canal system.
  • A pulpotomy is generally applicable to cases where the bacteria have not reached the root canal system.
  • The tooth in pulpotomy is filled with a temporary crown, which is later absorbed by the body. While in root canal treatment, the tooth gets a permanent filling.
  • While both the treatments are set to begin on the same stage, pulpotomy requires a single sitting compared to the root canal, which often requires multiple visits to the dentist.

While the treatment seems to be a bit different, the purpose is the same. Dental emergencies should be reported either to your relatives or directly to your dentist at an early call. There is no going back after you have entirely lost one fully functional part of your body.

While the 24-hour emergency dentists are here to serve people at any given time, one must ensure that he keeps a check on specific symptoms associated with tooth cavities. Inability to chew, signs of infection around the tooth, or an increasing pain should be noted. In case you feel severe pain, you should call for an urgent dental care service.
