3 ways to relieve insomnia using CBD

So, after a hard day’s work, it is finally time to dive into your cozy bed for a goodnight’s sleep! But after tossing and turning for 30 minutes or so, you find yourself unable to fall asleep. Why so? Late-night work, stress, and binge-watching web series might be the culprits. These factors can lead to sleep disorders such as insomnia.

The quest for a good night’s sleep may get you addicted to sleeping pills, which in turn has side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness. In some cases, meditation and even the no-tech-before-sleep method doesn’t work.

What to do?

In recent years, CBD found in the cannabis plant has become popular for treating insomnia. And in this post, we will tell you all about it.

One can use weed vaporizer for relieving insomnia.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, one of the primary cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that combine with the receptors of your central nervous system. These work as chemical messengers and affect various body functions.

Another famous cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which gets you “high”. But as CBD is not psychoactive, it does not create a “buzz or high” feeling. It can be useful for treating epilepsy, Crohn’s disease, anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia.

Now let us see how it helps you in getting better sleep.

How does CBD help you sleep better?

The Endocannabinoid system is a biological system consisting of cannabinoids. This system helps in regulating body functions such as sleep, appetite, memory, and reproduction.

Endocannabinoids are molecules developed by your body. These bind themselves with the receptors, primarily CB1 and CB2, to cause an effect. Research suggests that the Cannabinoid CBD can interact with these receptors and impact your sleep/wake cycle. Further research states that CBD can treat anxiety, which is a major factor for poor sleep.

The cannabinoids present in CBD interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System, helping it attain a balanced state. CBD is also said to treat conditions such as –

  • Depression
  • Pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea due to chemotherapy

When your body is free from these ailments, you will automatically sleep better.

3 ways to relieve insomnia using CBD

First, let us understand the forms of CBD available. CBD extracted from the cannabis plant is called CBD oil. It can be extracted from the hemp plant or marijuana – both cannabis plant strains. Although only CBD derived from hemp is legal for use. This oil can be infused in different products such as –

CBD edibles

CBD edibles include cookies, cakes, gummies, and mints, etc. This is the easiest way to ingest CBD. Edibles are safe and non-intoxicating, so you won’t get “high”.

Sunday Scaries, which is a reputed brand, known for its 100% safe and extremely popular products, is commonly available online and in general stores.

Edibles usually take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. Factors that affect the CBD's metabolism are your weight, height, and what you ate before. But, as your digestive system slowly breaks these down, you get to experience long-lasting effects. So have an edible at least half an hour before you hit the bed.

You can absorb up to 30 % of the CBD you have consumed using edibles.

Vaping

You can inhale CBD using a vaporizer, a vape pen, or e-cigarettes. In this process, the CBD extract is heated up, converted to vapor, and then inhaled by the user.

This method is beneficial as the CBD enters the bloodstream directly. So, the effects kick in faster, usually within 10 minutes or less. This way, you can absorb 34 to 56 % of the CBD.

Research suggests that vaping and smoking are extremely effective ways of consuming CBD.

Vaping CBD 10 minutes before hitting the sheets can make you relax and help with a good night’s sleep.

CBD tinctures

These are highly concentrated extracts of CBD and are available in liquid form. CBD tinctures are created by suspending CBD under 60 to 70 % distilled alcohol. They consist of extracts of hemp along with glycerin, alcohol, and peppermint oil. It is potent, having a high amount of CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in a permissible limit of not more than 0.3 %.

As these tinctures have alcohol, they have a longer shelf life.

If you don't like the bitter taste of tinctures, add them to soup, drink, or any food item. And if the bitterness doesn’t bother you, put a few drops of it under your tongue. You’ll get faster results this way. Having tinctures sublingually at least half an hour before hitting the bed can help provide a night of better sleep.

Another way to relieve insomnia is by using CBD bath salts; taking warm baths helps fall asleep faster. So, toss in some CBD salts in your tub next time you take a bath.

Note: the dosage of all the CBD products mentioned above will depend upon your body chemistry and the severity of insomnia.

Tips to get proper shut-eye

Here are some simple lifestyle changes that can help you cure insomnia –

  • Wake up and go to bed at a fixed time every day, including weekends
  • Limit the intake of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine
  • Get some exercise regularly such as jogging or running
  •  Eat light meals before going to bed. Finish the meal at least 2 hours before going to bed
  •  Avoid taking naps during the day
  • Try going to bed only when you feel tired
  • Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and comfortable
  • Don’t try too hard to sleep and get out of bed when you can’t sleep anymore

If the CBD products and tips mentioned above do not help, you must consult a doctor. You might be prescribed medication and behavioral therapy. It is also recommended that you consult a specialist before buying and consuming CBD products.
