Your Guide to the 15 NDIS Support Categories 2020 - 2021

Getting the support that you deserve from the National Disability Insurance Schemecan be complicated. Thankfully, we here at Nextt are here to make NDIS funding more accessible and make sure you know all about the different NDIS support categories available in 2020 – 2021 and what type of help they can provide those with disabilities.

The most important step is understanding all of the different NDIS support categories. These vary greatly as there are 15 categories overall. However, they can be split into three main groups: NDIS core supports, capital services and capacity building activities. In order to help you better understand each of them, we’ve summed up all of them and what services they provide.

a)    Core Supports

Core supports are the first set of NDIS support categories for 2020 – 2021. These services aid those enrolled in NDIS with being able to do daily activities and work towards their goals.

The NDIS core support categories include:

1.    Assistance with daily life: this goes over any assistance needed with household decisions, supervision for shared living arrangements and personal care. It also covers food services as well.

2.    Transport: this covers transport to school or work and access to recreational or vocational community programs.
4.    Consumables: this category includes any consumable products or services that help with daily activities consumable products or services that help with daily activities. This includes interpreting and translating, plus home enteral nutrition help.
5.    Assistances with social and community participation: this allows participants to take part in groups that help them reach their development goals, such as art programs and accessibility camps.

b.    Capital

Capital is the second subsection of NDIS support categories for 2020 – 2021. These regard to any investments that NDIS participants need to make in order to help them with day-to-day activities.

The two NDIS capital support categories are as follows:

6.    Assistive technology: this covers the cost of any assistive technology like wheelchairs and hearing aids.
7.    Home modifications: this covers any money that is used to make homes more liveable for those with disabilities.

c.    Capacity Building

The rest of the NDIS support categories for 2020 – 2021 are capacity building activities. These relate to programs or support that allow NDIS participants build skills that enable them to be as independent as possible.

The capacity building NDIS support categories are:

7.    Coordination of supports: this covers the costs for NDIS support coordination. This allows for consultation with support coordinators in order to create individually tailored plans.
8.    Improved living arrangements: this deals with helping participants get optimal living arrangements, such as moving into a group home or getting individual accommodation support.
9.    Increased social and community participation: this category provides access to a wide range of community programs, including childcare, peer support, fitness groups and respite services.
10.    Find a job: this provides participants with help in getting them prepared for employment and help finding a job.
11.    Improved relationships: this category helps participants better their skills in order to aid their interpersonal relationships.
12.    Improved health and wellbeing: this helps participants get in better shape and improve their physical help through dietary programs and help them access fitness needs.
13.    Improved learning: this will help participants become lifelong learners and includes school transition programs.
14.    Improved life choices: this aids NDIS participants in making proper life choices. Services include learning organisational, managerial and financial skills. 
15.    Improved daily living: finally, this support category covers anything that builds life skills. Such as, the Nextt Steps Program and other therapy services.
