TikTok's Ban on MLM - What It Means?

The covid-19 pandemic has changed the lifestyle of people all over the world. In the first wave of virus spread, the governments took extraordinary measures to stop the spread. Confining people to their homes was one of them. People were forced to stay in their homes for months without any public contact. This state of self-imprisonment made people spend more time on social media. According to the 2020 July, Global Statshot reports more than half of the world’s total population now uses social media.

This surge on social media made marketers focus more on social media platforms. Popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc. were already used as a tool to influence people.

All major social media platforms are struggling to stop a real problem they are facing lately, which is the spread of misleading information and false claims. Many platforms are bringing more regulations on using their services. The latest platform to do so is TikTok. At the end of 2020 TikTok, the emerging social media platform with around 800 million active users updated its community guidelines. In the latest update, they have restricted the uploading of content that promotes Ponzi schemes, pyramid schemes, and multilevel marketing.

This act by TikTok is applauded by many, even from the pro-MLM community. MLM, a legit business model, is exploited by many to their self-interest and made it a grey shaded industry. The restriction on MLM content has put a stop to influencers spreading false claims and fake opportunities. These move by TikTok helps to defend the good and prevent the bad. In short, TikTok's ban on MLM helps legit MLM companies.
