How to Ensure Employee Safety in Workplaces Post COVID-19.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, even as things slowly return to normal, there’s going to be a lot of recommended rules and procedures to follow in the next couple of years as the infection rates for the virus slowly taper off. This applies to all facets of everyday life, including the workplace.

There are many different types of workplace out there, so here we look at some of the most common types of workplace to discuss how employers in these sectors can ensure employee safety post-pandemic. From handwashing to app-based solutions, there are many ways to adapt your practices in 2021 and beyond.

Let’s get to it!

Offices

If you run an office, consider allowing some employees to work from home on a permanent or part-time basis. If you’ve found during that pandemic that your employees can work from home without causing any significant bottlenecks to your organization, then allowing increased remote working reduces the spread of viruses and boosts employee satisfaction.

Makes sense.

For workers who prefer to come into the office, be careful to space out desks so that social distancing can be put into practice. Spread hand sanitizer bottles around the office to remind people to keep their hands clean and consider a face covering policy (depending on official government advice at that point).

When it comes to workplaces like offices, contact tracing apps and initiatives can also be very useful.

Public Places (Malls, Events Spaces, Cinemas etc.)

If you’re running a workplace that involves a lot of foot traffic from the public, such as a supermarket or shopping mall, you should ideally limit the capacity of people allowed in the space according to government guidelines and enforce one-way systems and socially distanced queues to minimize the spread of germs from person to person.

However, there are more advanced solutions too.

An advanced mall mapping software is a brilliant modern solution that can help to minimize crowds mixing in your mall. This kind of software provides shoppers with clear, step-by-step directions to find the store they’re looking for, so they don’t have to wander around the mall for longer than necessary.

It’s also a good way to gain insight on your mall, how full it is, how people use it, and the way in which people move around the building. With insights like this, you can put increased safety measures in place that help to keep both your shoppers and your employees safe.

Transport

If you work in public transport, then you need to consider limited capacities, mandatory facemasks, and socially distanced seating arrangements for the foreseeable future unless healthcare advice changes.

Where possible, install Perspex screens so that the drivers of buses, trams, trains etc. can interact with members of the public safely. Hand sanitizer stations around the vehicle could also be a good idea for both passengers and employees, whether it’s an airplane or a taxi.

Service & Hospitality

For employers who run an establishment such as a restaurant or café, you need to consider socially distanced tables, increased hygiene practices and increased handwashing, especially for chefs and servers who are handling plates and cutlery. It is imperative that these tasks can be carried out safely without employees or guests picking up germs.

You may also want employees to wear visors or facemasks depending on the current official guidance, and it would be wise to limit the number of guests who can dine in the establishment at one time. Also be careful to regularly wash guest and employee restrooms, where germs can spread easily on faucets and door handles. All these safety practices will increase the confidence of your employees when they return to their workplaces.

We hope you enjoyed those tips for ensuring employee safety post COVID-19! From social distancing to indoor mapping apps, there’s something for every workplace to try.
