Pakistan’s Rising Gaming Industry

Gaming is a hobby. At least it is, for most people. This is just one of those things you do for fun, and what you do for fun isn’t what you get paid for. You get paid for serious work, that achieves real-life goals. That’s just how the world works.

Or… is it? The worldwide gaming industry would disagree. Gaming today, has become a profession like many other things in the world. You can actually get paid today, for playing video games. What’s even more surprising? The Gaming Industry’s grown bigger than the Movie and the Music Industries, combined, with over $150 Billion in revenues. About a few decades ago, the word “gaming” didn’t say “money for the player”. There were barely any consoles at all.

As computers and televisions were popularized however, the concept of gaming on a digital screen also emerged. In the beginning there were merely a few consoles, that worked properly. Today, there are so many great options. From the Gaming PC Master Race, to the greatest of consoles in the form of the XBOX , PlayStation, and Nintendo series. Many people may have also heard that KFC’s trying their hands on a console now. We’re just as surprised as you were. As in weird flex being a fast food chain, but okay. Even mobile gaming is a huge industry today, regardless of the ridicule by other gamers.

Gaming in Pakistan?

So that was a global picture. What about Pakistan. What’s Pakistan got to do with Gaming? Well, the story’s long. But the story begins from a few passionate gamers from Pakistan. These people worked hard (or played hard?) to get where they are today. Many non-official tournaments were arranged in the country, for the sake of fun. Many hardcore gamers would take part, to try their luck and perhaps earn some cash with their skills. Among these, there were few that became more successful than others. There were two people that even non-gamers may have heard of and recognized.

If you’re a Pakistani gamer, you must have heard the name “Evil Geniuses”, which is a DOTA 2 team that won the competitions Dota Asia Championships and The International 2015. The team’s based in the US, but one their key players, Sumail Hassan, originates from Pakistan.

Then comes the more recent Tekken Event. Every gamer in Pakistan has heard of that one guy, that won multiple tournaments in Pakistan, as well as Internationally. Arslan Ash, garnered a lot of fame, by being that one guy from some country that took the world of Tekken by storm. EG’s win was a big deal in itself. But this random guy from some country, single-handedly taking over the traditional gaming countries’ sport, was too big. It was just too big of a shocker and surprise, for anyone to miss out on. This brought gaming into one of the mainstream professions, in Pakistan. Arslan got International sponsors, and appraisals, and a lot more recognition that any other gamer from the country. His journey too, one of a kind.

This was probably one the the big shifts for gaming in Pakistan. Soon after, big companies started spending huge amounts of money into this industry for Pakistai gamers. The number of professional gamers in Pakistan had already grown exponentially in the past few years. But there are official tournaments being held by Tencent and Garena for their games PUBG and FreeFire, involving various non-gaming entities as well. Seeing this, other companies may also follow their lead, to get their share of the pie.

Previously, we saw the boom of the Content Creation Industry. In a matter of years, this industry went from the people that were made fun of, to the people naysayers now aspire to be. The gaming industry seems to be heading on a similar track. Many content creators too, earn today by streaming gameplay of their favourite games. So one could say that the two industries are also connected in some ways.
