Does Your Home Have Sufficient Fire Protection?

In Scotland, we have very stringent fire safety regulations that are in place to help reduce injury and death caused by fire. New, tighter regulations were due to come into force in February 2021. However, they have now been delayed until next year due to COVID-19 prohibiting people getting the necessary work done to meet the new regulations.  It will be the property owner’s responsibility to meet the new standards, however, the legal duty to enforce the standard rests with local authorities.

Many people still believe fires are a thing of the past and they will be fine because they live in a modern house and not an old home with an open fire.  The Grenfell Tower disaster in London is a horrible reminder that none of us are safe from fire in our homes.

Nowadays, we are constantly using electricity for our devices and appliances.  If we don't have the washing machine on, we are charging our mobile phones or working from home on our PC.

Fire Alarm Rules for Homes in Scotland?

Every domestic property must have:

  • 1 smoke alarm installed in the most frequently used daytime living room.
  • 1 smoke alarm in each circulation space on each storey. In other words, in the hall or landing of each floor.
  • 1 heat alarm in every kitchen.

It is no longer acceptable just to stick a battery-operated alarm on the ceiling of each room as detailed above as they must all be interlinked.  This means that if a fire starts in the kitchen when you are asleep upstairs, the alarm nearest your room will also be triggered to warn you.

If your home needs a new or upgraded fire alarm system installed then we advice choosing a BAFE Accredited company.  This will ensure the work is done to the required standard and you and your family will be safe and secure.
