Pharmaceutical Excipients are widely used in pharmaceutical dosage to aid the manufacturing processes and enhance stability

Excipients are defined in several different ways, including simply as foreign chemicals used as ingredients in drugs and as inactive ingredients used in carrier oils. In recent years, however, excipients have proven to be anything although inactive, not just possessing the power to interact with other materials in the formulation, although even to cause allergic and adverse reactions in certain patients. Pharmaceutical excipients are substances in a pharmaceutical formulation that can be used to extend the shelf life of the finished product. These include flavorings, colors, and binders. These are not technically vitamins and therefore will not convert to them when swallowed.

The word pharmaceutical excipients are derived from the Latin phrase ex Crispus, which means 'not sweetened with honey.' Generally understood, the term pharmaceutical excipients are used to describe anything added to a product that helps to make it more palatable for human consumption. As the profession of pharmaceuticals has grown in recent years, there have been growing concerns about the health risks associated with the chemicals and synthetics used in the manufacture of most pharmaceutical products. The use of ingredients to achieve these goals is called "dispersal".
