Different Types of OSSD Courses in Various Educational Academies

OSSD in Ontario is one of the most important educational credentials students in the province should acquire. It stands for ‘Ontario Secondary School Diploma’ and it is included in the publicly funded, province-wide school system. It is given only to students who complete the local education curriculum, such MaCS, special education, IB, TOPS, and other relevant programs.

If you are moving to Ontario and you have yet to complete your secondary education, you may want to consider OSSD courses to improve your chances of getting your diploma. That can help you get into one of the top universities in North America. A prestigious OSSD high school can also expand your horizons and improve your chances of getting into any international university of your choice.

To earn your OSSD in Canada, you must be able to earn compulsory credits in these subjects:

  • Mathematics – Three credits where at least one is given in Grade 12 or 11.
  • French (first language) or English – One credit per each year from Grades 9 to 12.
  • Canadian History – One credit in Grade 10.
  • Science – Two credits from Grades 9 and 10.
  • Arts – One credit
  • Health and Physical Education – One credit
  • Canadian Geography – One credit in Grade 9.
  • Civics and Career Studies – 0.5 credits each in Grade 10
  • Second language – One credit in English or French.

It is important to remember that OSSD courses will also cover certain areas, so you can get one extra credit for each. For example, you can get the additional credit in a classical, aboriginal, international, or second language, or from social sciences, humanities, Canadian or World studies, and career education and guidance. Technological education, computer studies, and cooperative education in Grades 11 or 12 can also provide extra credit for OSSD in Canada.

You can take up these subjects and complete them at an OSSD high school. Just make sure it is a reputable school with a proven good track record of accepting international students and helping them complete their high school and earn their OSSD in Ontario. A credit is provided in recognition of your successful completion of every course. Keep in mind that there are mandatory or compulsory credits, which you should successfully complete to meet OSSD requirements in Canada.
