Hotels have gone far from just being small houses with multiple rooms. Nowadays, hotels are known for being grand and luxurious. It’s no wonder that so many people want to work in the hospitality industry. If you’re one of them, then you’re going to love reading these 10 fun facts about the sector. 

 

  • The global hospitality industry generates over $850 billion in revenue.

 

In 2019 alone, the hotel market creates a revenue of over $850 billion, and it is expected to reach one trillion by 2020.

 

  • Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is the oldest hotel anywhere in the world.

In the Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan, you can find the oldest hotel in the world. The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan dates all the way back to 705 AD, and the same family has been running it for over 1,300 years.

 

  • There were 1.4 billion tourists in 2019.

 

The World Tourism Organization recorded around 1.4 billion international travelers all over the world, with the most visited countries being France, China, Spain, and Italy.

 

  • The highest swimming pool in the world is on top of the Marina Bay Sands.

 

 

Sitting 650 feet above the ground, the infinity pool atop the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore is the highest swimming pool in the world. It comes with sweeping views of the Singapore skyline. 

 

  • The First World Hotel is the largest hotel in the world.

 

Located in Malaysia, the First World Hotel has 7,351 rooms between two towers, but it could soon be replaced by the Abraj Kudai Hotel in Saudi Arabia, which is set to have 10,000 rooms upon completion.

 

  • You can find the tallest hotel in Dubai.

 

 

Dubai is actually home to many of the world’s tallest hotels, and on the top of the list is the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel. It’s 1,165 feet high and has 72 floors. 

 

  • Fairmont hotel properties feature resident Canine Ambassadors.

 

In select Fairmont Hotels around the world, you can expect to be greeted by their resident dogs. Guests can take them out for walks, and many of them are trained guide dogs. At the end of the day, an employee brings them home and takes care of all their veterinary needs.

 

  • A hotel in Kenya also doubles as a giraffe sanctuary.

 

 

In Nairobi, Kenya, you can have breakfast with the giraffes in Giraffe Manor. This exclusive boutique hotel is home to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, so guests are taught how to properly feed them in case they come asking for a snack.

 

  • The hospitality industry has an equal ratio of men to women employees.

 

When it comes to narrowing the gender gap, the hospitality is ahead of the curve with 53.7% of their employees being women. This ranges from maintenance jobs to managerial positions.

 

  • Many hotels don’t have a 13th floor.

 

Because of the connotation of misfortune and bad luck behind the number 13, a number of hotels in the world skip this floor. Similarly, some Asian hotels also have no fourth floor. If they do, they won’t have the room number 404 because the number four is associated with death.
