How a Smog Check Works?

The California Smog Check Inglewood CA allows vehicles which have been manufactured since 1976 to participate in the biennial smog check schedule in participating counties. This program is designed to help make the driving experience safer for you and your family by giving you a good quality air cleaner for your vehicle. By choosing to participate in this program you will be helping to keep the air clean and reduce the number of times you would have to drive through heavy smog on the freeway. The following information will help you understand how this program works.

First, when you turn your car over to the emissions testing station, one of the first tests is performed on the vehicle. The station will begin by measuring the amount of "coefficient of performance" that is on the exhaust. This is an index which can be compared to a scale to determine the efficiency of the emissions system on your vehicle. Once this test is complete, the station will advise you of the overall condition of your vehicle. This information is very important as it will give you a better understanding of why you're having problems with your vehicle.

Some vehicles require that the car or truck to be inspected every three to five years. However, many newer cars and trucks don't need their emissions checked as frequently as older models. So when you turn your vehicle over to the emissions testing station, you will be advised of the recommended model year that you should use to inspect your vehicle. If you choose a different model year then the emissions from that vehicle won't be as good as a newer one. Some models require yearly inspections while others are only recommended to be checked once a year.

Some newer cars and trucks do not require the regular visual inspection that most cars and trucks do. Instead, many of these vehicles require the functional inspection instead. When this type of inspection is required, the owner should check the oil and other fluids in the vehicle. They should also check the hoses, connectors, and any other items that could possibly cause leaks. The visual inspection isn't usually required for cars and trucks that aren't considered "new". Even though new cars and trucks typically come with an emissions test measure, they don't always require it to be done.

California law requires that all emissions-conforming vehicles have at least one approved smog check device. This approved smog check device must be clearly visible and functioning. The law specifically states that if a person "uses" a motor vehicle in California with an approved device, that person "assigns" that vehicle to a vehicle maintenance technician who is also an approved "approved vendor" for the emission standards test. The legal language in this section is extremely dense, so if you have any questions, be sure to discuss them with your auto mechanic.

It's very important that you keep the emissions testing certificate with you when working on your vehicle. That will allow you to prove that your vehicle has passed the test and can be repaired in the event that the vehicle needs repair. The repair technician will need that certificate if you want to work on your vehicle. Even though you may not remember all the specific information that was required by California law, the certificates will help your repair technician get your vehicle repaired if the repair is necessary.

In addition to having an emissions certification, your vehicle must also have a smog test. This is typically located inside the car or truck, but some newer vehicles are now coming out that also have a portable smog station. Smog testing stations are typically located in highly trafficked streets or highways so that vehicle owners can conduct their own inspections. When a vehicle is inspected, the inspector will look for common problems, such as faulty fuel tank seals, worn out spark plugs, leaks in the engine, exhaust system clogs, and more. If a vehicle fails the smog test, it will be required to be repaired immediately.

Smog checks are a very important safety precaution. Although there are new cars being made that are friendlier to the environment, there are still a number of older models that emit harmful chemicals into the air when they are running. Some models will even experience an accelerated aging process due to the pollutants that they emit. That is why it is a good idea to purchase a newer model-year vehicle if possible. However, if you have an older car that doesn't pass the smog test, there is still a way to ensure that it is safer to drive. By having a dedicated vehicle inspection technician inspect your car annually, you can save yourself money and prevent harmful chemicals from entering the airways.
