Tips to Save Your Laptop Battery Life

Every laptop has different types of batteries and other specifications. Many of them have longer battery life, in the range of 8-9 hours, but some laptops have 2-3 hours of battery life. In short, battery life from one laptop to another is different.

Most of them with shorter battery life have powerful specifications, such as powerful graphics cards or faster processors. However, we are going to give you some tips to save your laptop battery life.

Our tips and techniques to save battery life of a laptop

  1. Disable Wireless Connectivity (WiFi).

This is the best way, yet the most simple thing you can do to preserve the battery life is to disable the WiFi when you don’t need it. On many laptops, you will have a shortcut key on the top of the keyboard to switch WiFi off, while in others, you will need to use the function key (Fn), it depends on the laptop’s brand you are using.

Other than keyboard keys, you can also use your system’s settings, which is easily found via a control panel on Windows computers, and System Preference on Mac Computers. By doing this first simple step, you will definitely have a longer battery life, which also means you will have a good chance to use your laptop a little longer than usual.

  1. Lower Screen Brightness.

The second of well-known methods to save your battery is to turn down your screen brightness. Like the first technique above, many laptop’s keyboards have keys on the top with two small sunshine pictures of the keys, which you can use to turn down and turn up the screen brightness.

It also depends on where you use your laptop, but when you are using it in an environment where it has enough light, turning down the brightness setting should not reduce your screen usability.

Another technique that can be combined with turning down the screen brightness settings is choosing the best angle for your screen by changing the laptop position, so you can have the best view while having minimum usable brightness.

  1. Exit programs that you don’t use.

According to Tech Bords experience, it happens a lot that we use a laptop while we also have a lot of programs running in the background automatically without us starting it. Something like this can happen, mostly, because we forgot to exit from some programs we previously run completely.

There are many ways you can avoid it from happening, one simple way is to disable some unnecessary programs from your system startup.

Here are the steps on how we can disable them from our system startup.

In Windows laptops (using Windows OS):

  1. Click the little Windows icon at the left bottom of your screen. This will bring a list of your programs and folders.
  2. Search for a folder called “Startup”.
  3. Double click that folder to see the contents.
  4. You will see your program lists that are enabled on startup. To disable some of them, right-click the icon and delete the icon.

By doing this, you have disabled unwanted programs to launch whenever you start your laptop.

Disable some apps on Mac laptops from startup

  1. On the Dock, click on “System Preference”.
  2. Scroll, find “Users and Groups”, Click once.
  3. On the tab, click “Login Items”
  4. To disable some apps, you can uncheck the tick box.

Disable the programs to automatically launch or run whenever you start your computer can really help to save the battery because when they are inactive, they don’t use your system’s resources.

Other than turning off some programs from the startup, you can also check manually what kind of programs are actually running right now. To do this, you can check your “tray” on Windows 7 OS on the right bottom of your screen and do right-click on them and choose “Exit” to close the program completely.

Although it is imperative to note that to close some programs, you should check first what programs they are, to avoid system crashes, we suggest you not to close any programs if you are unsure how to do and what they are. This is because Windows has core programs to run the whole operating system, and if they are disabled, you might have a problem with your laptop, it will stop running. It`s essential always to double-check the program, and let them run if you’re in doubt.

  1. Use less multimedia content such as Music and Movies.

Tech Reviews Mag research shows that playing music and watching movies on a computer is the most popular usage among computer users. However, those activities are considered to be very heavy programs that will reduce your battery drastically. Even though you are allowed to do that, it’s best to avoid it whenever you can, especially if you are doing something else in the background, such as listening to your music and editing documents at the same time.

  1. Tweaking Power Saving Setting.

Every laptop that runs Windows OS has an option where you can modify the power options as you wish. By doing a right-click on the power icon (shown mostly with a small battery icon), you will be able to access the power options. You can also alternatively look for this option in your cPanel.

In this setting, you can actually do a lot of things to save your laptop battery life, such as determining how many minutes your screen can be dimmed if it’s not in use and many other settings.

By doing the techniques and tips above, you can experience which point is actually giving the best result. Saving a laptop battery life doesn’t always mean you have to reduce the device usability itself and also your productivity while using your laptop.
