What’s the Deal with the USMLE Step 2 CK?

What Is on the USMLE Step 2 CK?

The USMLE Step 2 CK exam comes after taking the USMLE Step 1 exam. You are tested on your ability to apply scientific knowledge related to patient care.

Step 2 CK takes place in a supervised clinical practice setting. It’s taken by med students in their 4th year of medical school. This is the time when knowledge from your clinical rotations is still fresh in your mind.

Step 2 CK is a 9-hour computerized exam. It contains multiple-choice questions divided into 8 blocks of 60 minutes each. The topics tested include the following medical specialties:

  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Internal medicine
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Preventive medicine
  • Other topics related to providing patient care under supervision

Step 2 CK involves describing a clinical situation. You will be required to handle one or more of the following:

  • Indication of underlying mechanisms
  • Diagnosis
  • Preventive measures
