What is a preimplantation genetic diagnosis?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a technique for analyzing embryos to differentiate those who are carriers of a genetic defect from those who are genetically normal.
The objective of this technique is to avoid the birth of children with chromosomal abnormalities since embryos diagnosed as abnormal are discarded for transfer. This increases the probability of embryo implantation and the probability of successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
PGD is a method that makes it possible to eliminate the probability of transmission of genetic diseases from parents to children. PGD detects point mutations in embryos that cause serious genetic diseases.
PGD is indicated as a complement to theIVF-ICSI process in the following situations:

- Repeated miscarriages.
- Advanced maternal age. The age of the mother increases the probability of genetic abnormalities within the embryo. This percentage is higher in women over 40.
- Family history of the disease or genetic alteration.
