Smart countries know that the key to urban mobility is moving people. Singapore is one of the most technologically advanced and smartest countries in the world in terms of public transportation. It gives priority to the most affordable, efficient mode of transportation - the public transport system. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and transport operators like SMRT Corporation are working on new technologies and innovative solutions to not only make public transportation more intelligent but also safer and reliable.

SMRT Corporation is the leading public transport operator. It is committed to leading Singapore towards a smart transportation system through the use of data and analytics and the renewal of rail infrastructure. SMRT is paving the way for better commuter journeys by providing better connectivity, convenience, safety, and information. Here is how SMRT has been successful in providing better journeys and improved transport services.

• Smoother rides: Under the timber replacement programme, SMRT has replaced 188,000 concrete and timber sleepers to support the rail lines in the North-South and East-West mass rapid transit (MRT) network. With more durable sleepers, riders can enjoy smoother rides in the long run.

• More reliable network: The operator replaced the Third Rail system in the NSEWL lines. Third Rail is a steel rail that powers metro trains. By replacing these third rails, SMRT will be able to minimise third rail-related faults, so commuters can enjoy reliable journeys.

• Shorter wait time: The NSEWL rail networks is now operational with the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. This new signalling system will reduce the train deployment time from 120-second to 100-second. During peak hours, commuters will have to wait for a shorter duration.

• More train frequency: SMRT is working closely with LTA and Bombardier Transportation in adding new trains to the existing fleet of the NSEWL. More trains mean more frequency and lesser congestion and traffic. People can get to their destination more quickly.

The operator conducted a survey to know what commuters think about its renewal efforts and found that 90% of people think SMRT is improving travel experience with the level of works it is doing.

One survey respondent wrote, “Thanks to all SMRT staff who are trying their best to make our travelling comfortable and reliable.”

SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming commented on the company’s efforts to provide better commuter journeys, “The commuter is at the heart of all that we do. We put ourselves in the commuters’ shoes. The concerted effort of our employees and the patience and support especially from commuters have helped us to bring sustained reliability, safety and customer satisfaction.”

Seah Moon Ming further added, “I would like to thank our commuters and various stakeholders for their patience and understanding as we work to provide safe, reliable and commuter-centric public transport services.”

Conclusion
Being the leading transport operator of Singapore, SMRT is showing the way through its initiatives to implement modern, advanced technological systems in the MRT network. It is more focused on operations and tracks and train renewal projects to provide a better commuter experience and ensure their safety and security.
