Can Airtracks make you better at gymnastics?

Can Airtracks make you better at gymnastics?

We often hear that if you buy an Airtrack you will more quickly become better at gymnastics. But is this actually true or just a marketing phrase to see more Airtracks? I bought a new GymPlay H10 Airtrack laster year for my daughter who had been doing gymnastics for about 4 months before she got her Airtrack and here are my personal experience with it all.

My daughter isn't the most athletic type of person, so she had a hard time with many of the gymnastic jumps. It took her a long time to do a proper cartwheel or a handstand so I hoped that buying an Airtrack would help her to train the various jumps and learn new stuff faster because of the help the Airtrack provides. But let's take a look at what an Airtrack is and why it may be a good aid for those doing gymnastics.

What is an Airtrack?

If you haven't heard about Airtracks before now, it's a new type of inflatable gymnastic training mat. They are normally around 1½ meter wide, 3-5 meter long and 10cm thick and filled with air. Because of all the air in the Airtrack it gives a bouncy effect when you do jumps on it. Kinda like when you do jumps on a trampoline, but not quite that effective. I would say on a 3m 10cm model you get about 15-20% increased heigh on your jumps. You can also get them in other sizes, and the bigger it is the more power does it transfer to your jumps.  This enables you to do all kind of various jumps and series of jumps you wouldn't normally be able to do on the floor or a regular gym mat.

Does an Airtrack really make gymnastic easier?

So did this Air track really help my daugher become better at gymnastic or is it mainly a tool for those already good at gymnastics? I must admit that I was actually surprised about how much it helped. Those additional 10-15% extra power was enough to make a big difference. What she lacked in physical strength she gained for the additional help from the Airtrack. Now she could learn the jumps as quickly as many of the other girls in her gymnastic class. And once you can do a jump on the Airtrack you can easily train it over and over until you are good enough to do it without any Airtrack help.  So I would have to say that an Air track does indeed provide a lot of help for those who need a little help with their gymnastics, or people who just want to learn the jumps faster than normal.

Instead of quitting gymnastics, like she had planned she now loves it more than ever all because of the new Airtrack she got.

I also do a lot sport myself, and I did also try the Airtrack - but I must say it's mainly something for the younger people. My body simply won't the jumps and flips my daugher can do. I guess that's also why you mainly see young people doing gymnastics. I mainly do standup paddleboarding on my Uhrdal board, so it's quite different from gymnastics.

If you got kids who love being active, or you would love them to be more active, consider getting an Airtrack (or a high quality trampoline) for them to play with. Even if they don't normally do gymnastics, it's often still fun to do a backflip or salto on the Airtrack and it's something you can play with yourself for hours or do with your friends.
