Everyone these days has a Facebook or Twitter page and they hope companies have one too. In truth, to really see success as a business in these digital times, you need to connect with your customers on a personal level, Twitter helps you do that.

But how do you make it effective? What are the clients looking for you to follow them? Let's take a look at some ways to use Twitter effectively as a marketing tool for your business:

Always provide something of value

Every Tweet you post should provide valuable information for your followers. Whether it's important industry news, a new product from the company or service you're launching or a photo of your staff, your customers should get something out of it. It must be something they need to know or enjoy as a follower of your company.

Also keep in mind that the content of your Tweets must be somewhat compatible, something that your users want to transmit to their friends. In the Twitter world, the more retweets you get, the more people will see your name and logo and company.

Be conversational and welcoming

Even though you are using Twitter as a marketing tool, you should not be overly aggressive with your promotions and marketing messages on your account. Instead, use a more conversational tone and approach your followers as equals when posting content. Ask them questions, start discussions and get them involved. The good thing about Twitter is that a company is personalized, it has a face, a voice and a personality. Twitter breaks the typical wall between a company and its customers, take advantage of it.

Pay attention

Twitter takes time. You can't put a page on and wait to take off, but it takes a lot of hard work, effort, and planning to make it a success. To get your online business up and running on Twitter, you should make plans to spend at least an hour a day on your twitter account: post some updates, answer any questions or messages you receive, and perhaps send some fun or interesting re-tweets. Don't let your account get lost on the way.

Watch your time

While regular publication is important, but also when you publish it is important. Believe it or not, there are certain times that are better than others for posting Twitter content. For example, studies show that tweets sent Monday through Thursday between 1 and 3 in the afternoon, right after eating, are going to have the most clicks and re-tweets. At the other extreme, updates sent after 8:00 p.m. on any day, or after 3 p.m. on Friday, are going to have a drop in clicks and re-tweets.

Offer exclusive content

The best way to gain new followers on your Twitter account is to offer exclusive offers or content. Start a weekly Twitter contest or start posting monthly offers for your followers. This will encourage new fans to join in and secure their old fans by keeping them happy.
