US President Joe Biden has shown US support for Ukraine in his first call to that country’s leader following reports of Russian troop movements on its eastern border. The White House issued a statement and said Biden showed his support in his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. He affirmed unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. The United States and Ukraine also said that Russia is increasing tensions in eastern Ukraine, where Russia-backed separatists have been fighting Ukrainian forces since 2014. But, Russia rejected having a military presence there. The Pentagon recently alleged Russia of violating a 2020 ceasefire, including in a 26th March clash that killed 4 Ukrainian soldiers.

However, Ukraine’s military blamed a Russian mortar attack. After the call, Zelenskiy tweeted and said that Ukraine and the United States stand shoulder to shoulder when it comes to the preservation of our democracies. He called the partnership with Americans crucial for Ukrainians. The White House said President Biden also stressed his commitment to revitalizing strategic partnership between both countries and supporting efforts by Zelenskiy to fight corruption and promote democratic reforms. Point to be noted that former US President Donald Trump had emphasized a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also resisted calls to press Russia over its interference in the United States and other countries, including Ukraine and Syria.

Since taking office, President Biden has publicly rebuked Russian President Putin including saying last month he labeled Putin as a “killer”. In response, Russia recalled its ambassador to the United States and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov kept up Russia’s complaints about Biden’s comments this week. Lavrov said Russian relations with the United States and its allies have hit the bottom. The White House administration also said that Ukrainian President Zelenskiy and President Biden also discussed cooperation in empowering democracy in Eastern Europe and containing the COVID-19 pandemic.
