Essential steps to be taken in an active shooter situation

This article originally appeared in https://defenderschoolllc.wistia.com/projects/3vjm234nu6

This year in the month of February, eight people were shot near a transit station in Philadelphia that created a situation of panic and fear among the pedestrians. The shooting took place in broad daylight, the police arrested one culprit and recovered two guns. Such cases in America are getting common day by day and it is important that you must know what you should do in an active shooter situation. With the help of Active Shooter Response Training, you can save your life as you're prepared. If you don't, below are some of the steps that you can follow in an active shooter situation:

  1. The first thing you can do is to evacuate the place only if it is possible. In an active shooter situation, look for any areas or any space that can help you escape. Help the others if they can't find a way to get out. You must keep your hands visible and proceed further as directed by the police officers.

  2. If you can't escape, the only thing you can do is hide. Hide at a place where the shooter can't see you. Turn off the lights, switch off your phone, use furniture like large tables, or doors to shield yourself.

  3. Listening properly to the orders of law enforcement is very important too. The enforcement team will guide you and keep your hopes up as they've got the situation in control. You must not point, yell, or make any swift movements that can alert the shooters and can put your life in danger.

  4. This step is only applicable if the shooter finds you or tries to intimidate you. The last resort is - Fight! Fighting back will prove as a shock and it may unarm the shooter. You can also try to throw items to stop the shooter and use things like scissors to save your life. If you’re a trainee of an Active Shooter Response Training Center, taking this action would be less dangerous.

  5. If you get the chance and if you feel safe, call 911. Tell the operator about the current scenario that includes the location of the shooter(s), their description, the type of weapon they're using, your location, and the number of hostages or the injured ones.

Keeping these important points in mind can prove to be beneficial while tackling a situation like that happened in Philadelphia, you can keep yourself safe and the others too.
