WHY STUDY PHD ONLINE

Don’t expect that online studying is the same as sitting in a classroom or lecture theatre: it cannot be and it isn’t. Some things are lost but many others gained.

What can be lost is that easy sense of collegiality. Exchanging social media contacts isn’t the same as sitting down and discussing, arguing, and laughing face-to-face. Then you have the opportunity to observe and be observed in ways a small online screen cannot yet reproduce. Collegiality is certainly important. Building and sustaining contacts can help you through the complexities of tutorials and the tasks set. You can replace these online and replace them more dynamically and effectively than in the classroom. Study PhD online can be challenging but equally, it can be rewarding.

The biggest problem produced by the online study is not so much the absence of real physical contact so much as the belief that something is absent. The fear that online study is intrinsically second best, that anything learned is somehow substandard can fold around the student and produce a reality. As the philosopher William James puts it, “Belief creates the actual fact”. A worry that online work isn’t effective quickly makes it so. Belief creates reality.

This should not, however, be a negative reality. It can be that online learning – if approached positively and responsively as well as responsibly – is more than a match for the traditional lecture theatre, hung with clouds of carcinogenic chalk dust lit poorly by ancient neon lighting. What is lost is being there rather than being in your bedroom, drawing room, or – often I’ve noticed – bathroom. Being in a lecture theatre removes distractions and excuses, you feel you are in a place of engagement where you have chosen and control your environment. What is gained is the power of place. There will be distractions – your flatmate wants to cook breakfast, the cat wants to be taken for a walk, your little sister’s tarantula escapes – but these can be managed positively. Online study PhD in UK allows students to establish a sense of virtual scholarly place: this may not be easy but it’s possible and incredibly powerful. The effort of turning personal space into studying space creates an experience that – with the right approach – is empowering and exciting, as well as focussing effort on your terms. Creatives – writers and artists – have predominantly and historically worked from home or non-scholastic environments. Mozart often wrote in pubs while Shakespeare used his local business hub. All that has changed is our interconnectivity, and this gives online study a universe of possibilities where scholastic imagination can take flight. Hanging out in the departmental café can rarely offer such flights.

Once Shakespeare worked out how to scan the right QR code, he was away. Where the bee sucks. there suck I: In a cowslip’s bell I lie; There I couch when owls do cry. On the bat’s back, I do fly After summer merrily. Merrily, merrily shall I live now Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

Of course, an online study PhD has other advantages as well. It allows you to combine your studies with work and family commitments. For many, it is out of the question to put their careers and family life on hold for three years. There are also definite advantages to combine your studies with your career. Studying gives greater context to your career and your day-to-day work can very effectively feed into your research.
