Regular data backups are one of the most important mandatory tasks for website administrators - in an emergency, backups are invaluable. Because worse than a website that can suddenly no longer be reached is a complete loss of data. The cause for this can be, for example, a hacker attack or a faulty update. A complete data backup includes the files stored on the webserver and the database. Find out how to secure your data here.

You have three options for securing your multisite website:

Another handy one-click solution is GoDaddy's paid website backup . You benefit from daily automatic cloud backups and website restoration with one click. This means that you do not lose any valuable working time and you can access your data again immediately. With this solution, you create a full backup of the entire WordPress multisite. In addition, the clever tool constantly monitors your data and reliably detects pests such as malware. Your website is always saved in a clean copy.

If you want to be on the safe side, you can make an on-demand backup in between - for example before installing updates - and download the data to local storage media if necessary. This is a safe approach for migrations, for example.

Costs: from 28 euros / year

Note: With WordPress hosting from GoDaddy, website backup protection with one-click restore is included in the package.

3. Manual multisite backup
If you don't want to spend any money, you can back up your WordPress multsite website with a manual backup and save the data locally on your computer. This route is the time-consuming alternative. You have to download all files stored in the web directory via FTP and export the database. Downloading many thousands of files via FTP can quickly take an hour or more.

Access to the FTP login data is via the account management of the hosting provider. There you will usually find the FTP access data with host, user name, password and port in the settings.

Enter the FTP login data and connect to the server.
The free FileZilla tool is popular for downloading files via FTP .

Start the program, click on File> Server Manager, enter the access data (see figure) and click on Connect.
The root directory of the web server appears on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side, select an empty directory on your hard drive to which the files should be downloaded.
Now you select the desired WordPress root folder on the right side, click with the right mouse button on the directory and select “Download” in the context menu.
To manually download the database, open phpMyAdmin and create an export. Access to phpMyAdmin is again via the customer menu. For exporting follow our instructions for exporting MySQL database .
