What to expect post-op: Breast Augmentation in Cape Town

Many women considering breast implant in South Africa are often worried about the post-op recovery and sometimes fear that the healing process may linger on a bit too long, which will consume months of their time. However, we are here to inform you that this is not the case.

It is important to remember that each patient will differ in recovery time and healing overall, as every women’s body has a natural recovery response and pain tolerance. The surgical technique used during the operation, the type of breast implant, the size of the implant and the placement of the implant, will all affect the recovery process as a whole.

Days and Weeks Post-op:

The days following breast implants surgery are when the patient will feel moderate pain and discomfort, which can be combatted with prescribed pain medication from your surgeon. It is common for there to be swelling and bruising in the breast and chest area, and a surgical bra and compression bandages are provided to be worn to help reduce the overall discomfort, as well as to protect the surgical wounds. It is not very common but is possible for some patients to experience nausea from the anaesthesia used during the procedure.

The first-week post-op is when most patients can perform less strenuous activities and exercise and may return to work, obviously depending on how physically demanding their work is. Patients must avoid strenuous movements such as bending and lifting. There is a post-op appointment after the first week, for the surgeon to inspect the incisions and breasts. After the second-week patients can usually return to their daily routines, while still avoiding vigorous exercise.

Once the first month post-op has passed, the majority of patients feel that they're ready to begin exercise again, while still taking precautions for anything too strenuous. It is usually around the sixth-week post-op that patients are healed and the recovery process is coming to an end, as the pain and swelling should’ve subsided. Patients at this time are also able to sleep on their stomach or side and can return to wearing normal bra’s (under-wired or push up). The implants are usually settled and you should be able to see the final result of your beautiful new breasts.

Dealing with Scarring Post-Surgery:

Many women fear that after their breast enlargement in Cape Town, the scarring left behind post-op will be a giveaway that they've undergone breast implants. This is why it’s common for women to fear scarring post-surgery. Although some form of scarring is unavoidable, our skilled plastic surgeons at YourBreasts will be able to minimize the extent of the scarring, by placing the incision areas of less visibility (such as under the breast fold or around the areola line). We urge all of our patients to let time heal and be patient, as any scarring left post-surgery will heal and fade over time.

We also provide our amazing post-surgery scar-tissue oil which needs to be applied continuously throughout the healing process.
