British police have taken action against illegal tinted vehicles because the window colour was not checked during annual MOT tests. Now, in time for the next vehicle inspection, the new state law will force you to tint. The state of New York changed its window-staining law on January 1, 2017. Drivers with tinted windows were amazed when they switched to tinted windows for all vehicles during the annual inspection of their vehicles.

In model years 1995 or earlier, windows may be tinted to allow as much light as possible for the front and rear windows, but not for the sides or rear windows; from model year 1996, windows may be tinted to allow only one third of their original colour and less than one third of their original colour.
Glass coloring that reduces light transmission to less than 32% or increases light reflection by more than 20% is not permitted in side windows and rear windows. The colour, which allows less than 35% light transmission, must not cover or treat the side or rear windows, but may be tinted or covered.
An exception to this rule is when the tinted window installed by the manufacturer is in compliance with federal law and the window is tinted for medical reasons, which requires a medical or optometric certificate, which must always be carried with the car. Many other shops that offer window colours quote their inferior foils just to get you out the door. Ask your window manufacturer to confirm that the warranty does not expire by adding tints to your windows.
