How to clean air ducts?

Causes of air duct pollution

During the operation of the  air duct , inside it, or rather on its inner surface, a large amount of dirt, soot, dust and other harmful deposits accumulates. In addition to these factors, small debris, for example, after carrying out any repair work, can become the cause of air duct pollution.

Why are air duct clogs dangerous?

First of all, the fact that dirt tends to clog the duct channels, often narrowing its diameter, and in some cases completely blocking it. This state of affairs leads to an additional load on the ventilation equipment, and as a result - to their premature failure.

In addition to pollution of the air duct and deterioration of the performance of ventilation equipment, blockages have a very detrimental effect on the quality of the air itself, and in addition, dirty chimneys become both a cause and a breeding ground for pathogens, microorganisms, mold, and even insects and small rodents.

Dirty air ducts are also dangerous from a fire safety point of view. There are cases when even a small spark or grease, getting into the  air duct for kitchen hoods , became the cause of a fire, which spread at lightning speed throughout the room.

Air duct cleaning

In order to prevent the development of negative phenomena associated with clogging of the air duct, it is recommended to periodically carry out air vent cleaning Timely cleaning of the ventilation system will reduce the unnecessary load on the ventilation equipment, and at the same time improve the quality of the air that enters the room through this system. Not so long ago, only their complete replacement was considered the main way to get rid of clogged air ducts, but today this situation has changed dramatically, since there are tools and devices that allow you to organize effective cleaning of even very dirty air ducts and ventilation ducts.

At the moment, cleaning the air duct includes several important stages:

  1. Assessment of the general condition of the clogging of the canal. At this stage, a visual examination is organized using special equipment, which is often robotic machines equipped with a searchlight and a video camera, which, when moving along the duct, can display a visual image on the monitor screen. In addition to visual examination, samples are also taken for various analyzes for the presence of pathogens. Based on the assessment of visual inspection and analysis, a conclusion is made about the advisability of cleaning the air duct.

  2. Direct cleaning of the duct. It is strongly recommended to close all openings and valves of the air distribution system before starting cleaning work. Then a vacuum machine is connected to one of the sides of the air duct, which is necessary to organize negative pressure of high potential. The equipment has a highly efficient filter system and a powerful electric motor, which allows for high cleaning efficiency even in harsh conditions. A special machine with brushes is connected to the second outlet of the air duct, which is capable of cleaning both round and rectangular air ducts. The composition of this equipment, as a rule, includes a rigid body made of durable metal, control elements, a flexible shaft, a set of brushes that can rotate in several directions,

Due to the pressure created by the vacuum machine, deposits, dirt and debris are removed from the air duct, immediately falling into special filters at its outlet. This method is effective for air ducts with a diameter of 0.15 to one meter. If the cross-section of the duct is relatively small, then good results in cleaning can be obtained by using a special brush connected to an electric motor.

In cleaning the air ducts of ventilation equipment, which works in public catering facilities (restaurants, canteens), the "dry ice" cleaning method has proven itself well. The principle of this method consists in firing dry ice particles on the inner surface of the  gadfly air for ventilation . As a result of this action, both simple and difficult to remove fat deposits are "undermined", which, when loosening, can be easily removed using a vacuum machine. Compared to chemical duct cleaning products, dry ice is environmentally friendly and provides guaranteed results.
