There are hundreds of options when choosing your hotel. Your choices range from a single bed in a hostel or a functional bed and breakfast, to a 2 bedroom apartment in London or a suite with amenities so luxurious you won’t even want to leave the building.

So, how do you go about making that decision? We’ve put together a list of some of the key things to consider when booking your stay, to make that all-important choice a little easier.

Picking your hotel

London offers a range of accommodation types suited to the purpose of your trip and your budget. One of the best and most useful way to figure out what sort of hotel you’ll need to book is to think about the specifications of your trip:

  • Travelling solo

Whether you are a solo traveller on a work trip or doing some travel soul-searching, London has plenty of affordable options (despite its reputation!). Go for some of the hotels further outside of the city if you’re working with a smaller budget, and use the famous Underground system to make the short journey into London’s iconic centre.

  • Family stay

When travelling as a family, some of the city’s novelty options might be a better fit. Choose a themed room, or a hotel located in one of London’s many buildings with a history to add a fun twist to your stay.

  • Special occasion

If you’re staying as a celebration, choose any one of the most luxurious hotel in London for stellar concierge service, beautifully appointed suites, and plentiful amenities. The largest and best-known hotels are all located in central London: so this is the first place you should begin your hotel search for your special occasion.

Choose your location

There is something for every trip in England’s capital city. London is split into multiple districts, each with its own features for hotels. If you’re looking for something more quirky you can try Shoreditch or Camden. Westminster is great for sightseeing the modern landmarks and Tower Hill for a bit more history. Head to Hammersmith and Victoria for a more upmarket stay, and just south of the river checkout Borough or Southwark for something more affordable. For a trip where you plan to shop a lot, stay near Piccadilly for ease of access to Regent’s Street, Oxford Street and Covent Garden.

Getting around

The public transport links in London are great and every area is either connected via train, bus, or bike. London’s transport is fast and cheap, but depending on the purpose of your trip, you may want to avoid using it. If you are travelling with a large group, young children, or people less able to navigate on-foot, your best bet is to stay in a central location where all of London’s iconic sights are right on your doorstep.

On the other hand, the public transport is affordable, fast, and easy to navigate, meaning if you spring for a hotel on the city outskirts you can still gain access to London with a short journey, while saving those vital funds for extra shopping and sightseeing in the city.

Seasonal considerations

Spring

In spring, some of the seasonal delights include the city’s many landmarks. Spring is the best time of year for sightseeing: no longer cold and raining, but not too hot to walk around the city and take in the historical sights. It’s best to stay in an area rich in history so you can start taking in the iconic landmarks from the minute you wake up.

Summer

When the sun is hot, shady parks and outdoor swimming pools are the places to head. The North London areas have plenty of Royal Parks on offer, many with open-air lakes ideal for cooling off. Choose a more northern hotel to stay in to make the most of the city’s many green spaces.

Autumn

When you need to start shooting for some indoor activities as it gets colder outside, the museum district is a sure all-star destination. Free entry to some of the world’s most astonishing exhibits: sure to keep you entertained for days!

Winter

In Winter, the bars and restaurants are a great way of viewing the twinkling lights of the city while staying warm. Locate yourself in the east amongst the city lights of Bank and Tower Hill, or along the city’s iconic Southbank for plentiful options for fine dining.
