Waterborne Epoxy Resins Are an Integral Part of the Growing End-Use Industry

Waterborne resins use water as the carrying medium as opposed to solvent or solvent-less. Waterborne resins are used in the production of composite materials, elastomers, sealants, adhesives, and coatings. The resin could be water dispersed, water reducible, or water-soluble. Waterborne epoxy resins are widely used due to their low volatile organic compound emission. These resins are used in many applications such as composites, coatings, adhesives, etc. Moreover, they provide a high degree of compatibility and have the capacity to get formulated with additives, co-solvents, and wetting agents to achieve formulations for superior adhesion to substrate high cure corrosion resistance.

Waterborne epoxy resin generally consists of an epoxy resin and a curing agent. Both the epoxy resin and the curing agent can be made waterborne. Waterborne epoxy resins have many applications. It is used as sealants and adhesives in a wide range of processes such as automotive maintenance, building construction, automotive parts manufacturing, chemical engineering, healthcare, food processing, pulp and lube industry, automotive detailing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic manufacturing, petrochemical plants, petroleum refining, and other oil and gas production and distribution. The epoxy resin has its importance in various constructional areas and other concrete products. It can be used to repair, reconstruct, and to protect concrete structures from external harm and weathering.

Waterborne resins are generally used in the manufacturing industry for application on metals and other heavy-duty articles. The main applications of this category of resins are as protection against oil and corrosion, as protection against dust, as an adhesive for repairing and assembling, as a greasing agent for fastening, as a thinner for bonding, as an insulator of gas, as an emulsifier of gas, and as a carrier of liquid. Some of its polymers have the property of deformation if exposed to certain chemicals. Water-based acrylics can also be considered to fall under the category of waterborne resin. Waterborne resins can be produced from many different polymer mixtures. Some of them are polyurethane, polyester, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, polyurethane-based on ethylene, polyurethane-based on propylene, and various other synthetic mixtures. These polymers and additives are blended to form a suitable coating. This coating is then exposed to various conditions such as heat, moisture, chemicals, and pressure to form a protective layer.

The main advantages of this type of coating are its low cost, flexibility, resistance to harsh chemicals and abrasion, and thermal stability. This is often used as an adhesive for metal, rubber, and plastic components. Waterborne epoxy resins are one of the most widely used waterborne resins due to their good adhesive properties. This coating also offers good protection against ultraviolet rays and has good sound reduction properties. It also acts as an antioxidant and prevents the onset of corrosion. The main advantages of this type of product are its easy application process, resistance to high temperatures, excellent sound reduction properties, and ability to withstand chemical action.

Specifically, waterborne resin finds use in clear coatings, automotive coatings, wood coatings, concrete coatings, adhesives, hygiene coatings, floor coatings, UV coatings, and industrial coatings. Moreover, they are used in the design and manufacture of medical devices.
