The Components of a Fishing Rod

A fishing rod, also known as a fishing pole or lure, is an extremely versatile, strong yet lightweight rod typically used by anglers to catch fish on the water. At its most basic, a fishing rod consists of a straight, strong stick or rod attached to a lead line end in some kind of hook. The length of this rod can range between 2 to 50 feet. To attract fish, lures or bait are attached to one or more hooks attached on to the line itself.

In the modern era, there are literally hundreds of fishing rods on the market, each having a different design, different weight and different purposes. Rods can also be made of different materials. Most fishing lines are either light or heavy gauge nylon, but there are also ultra-light and super-light options available. Most of these fishing rods tend to fall into one of two categories: the fishing rodwith a spinning reel and the fishing rod with an ultra-light reel.

Spinning reels work differently from other types of fishing rods in that they are normally made of graphite or fiberglass, with the exception of some premium grade, ultra-light spinning rods that are made entirely of graphite. They have a handle at the end of the pole and have blank faces, which are generally made of spincasting steel. Spinning action is quick and it requires practice to master the technique. Casting is usually done with a finger on the front of the pole, with the casting stroke made up of a quick motion of the arm and back of the hand, or with a thumb on the front (called a kickback stroke) and a backstroke stroke using the free hand.

Anglers who use fishing rods of any kind recognize that the type of fishing rod which is used will influence the quality of fishing that can be done. In this respect, many things must be considered. The length of the fishing rod, for example, will determine how much control an angler can exert over the line. Different lines, of course, will require different lengths of fishing rod and, among the most important things, the strength of the pole. A fisherman who uses a bare rod without any kind of reels or with a very weak line can often be forced to cast off the end of his pole if he is not strong enough to cast it straight and far enough away from his target.

On the other hand, fishing rods of the tankard variety are very strong and will give a great deal more power behind the casting. However, tankard rods are generally very long and might even exceed two feet in length. Because of this, anglers who use them must be extremely careful when casting their lines as the distance from the pole to the fish can be quite short. Even if a very strong line is used, there is still a good chance that the fish will escape from the end of the pole.

As with the fishing rod itself, the fishing pole's length will also affect the strength of the cast. If the rod cannot reach the target fish, it will not perform well. Therefore, if a fisherman wants to increase the chances of catching fish with his rod, he should ensure that the pole tips are at least one-fourth of an inch longer than the length of his rod. This will increase the chances of making contact with the fish and will increase the strength of the pole tip. Reels of varying lengths will also affect the strength of the cast.

The fishing rods and reels, together with the various lures that fishermen use, will all affect the outcome of the sport. Anglers who fish with spinning lures will be especially challenged by fishing poles of different sizes. Spinning fishing poles have to be handled with extra care in order to prevent the reel from breaking as a result of constant pulling on the rod. Smaller lures, which do not have the weight of larger lures, can be handled with ease, but if a fisherman is fishing with big sized lures he will need to handle them carefully in order to prevent the spool from being damaged.

A fishing rod and reel combination are not suitable for all situations. Before choosing the equipment, the user should estimate the number of fish expected to be caught on any particular day. If the number of fish is large, the user should choose a fishing rod that has a long casting distance. Similarly, if the fishing rod does not have the right capacity, the angler should not purchase the equipment.
