Skin Cancer

If current trends continue, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. That is more than 1 million skin cancers diagnosed each year. Unlike most other cancer diagnoses, however, skin cancer if diagnosed early is almost always easily curable. The best surveillance is annual full skin examinations with a dermatologist and regular self-examinations.

The most common types of skin cancer are listed below:

  • Basal cell carcinoma: This is the most common skin cancer. It is slow growing and almost never metastasizes (spreads through the body). It appears as a small, shiny pink or scaly pink growth that may bleed easily.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of skin cancer appears as red or pink scaly patches or bumps. It can metastasize if left untreated.
  • Melanoma: This is the least common, but the most dangerous, as they may spread quickly if not identified and treated early. They are usually enlarging brown or black moles with irregular borders, color and/or shapes. A melanoma may occur within an existing mole or as new mole.

Always consult a dermatologist if you have an enlarging skin growth or a non-healing sore. Depending on the size of the growth, skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions may be removed by liquid nitrogen or surgical removal, or prescription creams.

Acne

Acne is a common disorder that causes whiteheads, blackheads and cysts on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. The cause of acne is often multi-factorial – resulting from a combination of hormones, bacteria, oil gland activity, and plugged hair follicles. Having an occasional acne pimple or cyst is normal for most people and can be managed with over-the-counter medications. However, for many prescription treatment may be necessary in order to minimize its effects and prevent permanent scarring. Treatment may include topical medication, oral medication, chemical peels, or extraction of clogged pores. It is important to remember when starting acne treatment that there is no instant cure – it may take a few weeks to months before you see results. Sometimes a treatment that works for one person may not work for another, and sometimes breakouts can get worse before they get better.

Birthmarks

Birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth of superficial blood vessels or pigment cells. Different types of birthmarks include:

  • Port wine stains are red to purple discolorations on the skin caused by swollen blood vessels. They may be removed with laser therapy.
  • Hemangiomas or strawberry marks are flat red marks that appear in the first weeks of life and may enlarge significantly in the first year of life. Although many resolve without treatment, early diagnosis and monitoring is important because some may require treatment with laser or oral medications.
  • Brown birthmarks are present at birth. Certain types of these birthmarks respond well to laser treatment while others don’t. Usually a test treatment is carried out prior to laser treatment.
  • Congenital melanocytic nevi are brown moles that are present at birth. They should be monitored on a routine basis because they may carry a small risk of becoming cancerous over time.

Moles

Everyone has moles (also known as “nevi”), sometimes 40 or more. They are usually brown in color and can be various sizes and shapes. The brown color is caused by melanocytes, special cells that produce the pigment melanin. Moles probably are determined before a person is born. Most appear during the first 20 years of a person’s life, although some may not appear until later in life. Any rapid or suspicious changes in a mole, including changes in color, shape, symmetry, or size, especially when one mole on an individual looks different than the rest, should prompt immediate evaluation to ensure that it is not evolving into melanoma skin cancer.

Skin Tag Removal

Skin tags are harmless, soft, skin-colored growths that hang from the surface of the skin on a thin piece of tissue called a stalk. They most often occur in areas that are subject to friction, such as the neck, armpits, underneath the breasts or in the groin. They can occasionally become irritating or unsightly. Skin tags may be removed with surgical scissors, a sharp blade, or liquid nitrogen. Sometimes they can bleed extensively upon removal, requiring electrocauterization.

Warts are caused by certain subtypes of the human papilloma virus (HPV). They may develop on people of all ages anywhere on the skin. Dermatologists most commonly use liquid nitrogen, surgical excision, or blistering agents in the office to treat warts. In difficult cases, prescription creams or injections may be used. Most warts require a series of treatments at two to three week intervals for permanent removal.
