Color Usage For Kitchens

When it comes to using colors for kitchens, each color serves a different purpose.

Red

Red can create an intense effect in the kitchen. It instantly stands out to you when you look at it, and that makes it suitable for areas of the kitchen where there is some white and black. Red also tends to mix in nicely with other colors, but you have to make sure there is enough of the other color to make up for it because having too much red can defeat the purpose of the look you're going for. You'll also want to select the right shade of red to blend in with the kitchen.

Orange

If you're wanting more of a retro look in your kitchen, orange is a good choice to go with. Orange usually creates a bright look that lends to an upbeat feeling. It works nicely with different metals and tones of white. To make orange work in a kitchen, you'll need to examine how the light enters your kitchen. If the light hits the orange in the wrong way, things can feel too intense too quickly. You'll need to be careful around orange because stains can ruin the look of it fairly fast.

Wood

Woods tones can be efficiently used to make a home feel relaxing and cozy. It mixes nicely with a lot of whites, especially with countertops. Keep in mind that you can also select laminate wood material to replicate the look of wood throughout your kitchen. In order to keep your wood protected, you'll want to use sealant on it to ensure no damage occurs in the future.

Yellow

Yellow creates a kind of casual look and feel in a kitchen, but that will also depend on the shade of yellow you're using. If you choose the wrong shade, it'll look too powerful. Whenever you enter a kitchen that contains yellow, you'll notice the sense of vibrancy right away. If you have a lot of natural light flowing in, the yellow will even appear more vibrant and energetic. Yellow works nicely with walls that are painted white. If you want, you can also blend yellow in with darker walls and surfaces. Brighter colors tend to stain, and for that reason, you'll want to keep it as clean as you possibly can.

Green

Green has been popping up more and more in kitchen designs lately. If you choose a shade of green that isn't too dark, it can work nicely to compliment other parts of your kitchen. A lighter shade of green can create a natural look in your home that might remind you of the wilderness. Just make sure that the shade you pick will work nicely with the other aesthetics of your kitchen.

Turquoise

Using turquoise is an attractive color if your home is near the ocean. It'll remind you of the different shades of blues and greens, especially if it's a sunny day outside with nothing but blue skies. This color works nicely with lighter-colored materials in the kitchen. It also compliments wood materials and different kinds of ceramics.

Blue

If used properly, blue can make a strong statement in a home. Sometimes it can make a big room feel smaller, but it can also be used to make a tiny kitchen appear to be bigger. If you pair it with different materials wisely, it can make certain elements of your kitchen stand out a lot more.

Purple

Purple isn't chosen very much in kitchens, and it's no surprise why. Not many people think of this color when they walk into a kitchen. Some people are able to make it work, especially with how it combines with metallic surfaces, but it's just not all that common.

Pink

Like purple, pink is another color that you rarely find in kitchens. Some people are able to make it work if they're going for a retro style of kitchen. Pink has the tendency to make tiny kitchens appear bigger than they are. If you have some metal kitchen appliances, pink can compliment them nicely.

Black

Over the years, black has started to become more and more common. It creates more of an intense look because of how deep a color that it is. The darker colors usually make big kitchens feel smaller than they really are, and black will do exactly that. If you have white colors around your kitchen, using black is a nice way to offset things a bit. It adds a good measure of contrast in order to balance everything out. If black is used wisely, it can make your kitchen feel modern and contemporary.

Grey

If you're looking for more neutral tones, grey is a common choice to go with. Sometimes grey will appear to be dull at first glance, but it usually grows on people quickly. It's a color that combines nicely with metallic appliances and materials in the kitchen. It also works nicely if your walls are white.

White

White is a color that works almost anywhere you decide to put it. You can get white walls, white cabinets, white countertops, and pretty much white anything else, and it will still look good.

White is so widely used because of how it reflects the natural light throughout a home. It can make a smaller room appear bigger than it is, and that makes it a perfect choice if you have a tiny kitchen.

One thing about whites in kitchens is that you'll have to exercise caution because of how easy it can stain. If you happen to splash oil or grease on a white surface, you'll need to clean it up right away. If you get white countertops, you'll want to use a sealer on the countertops to keep them protected.

Beige

If you're wanting something in between brown and white, beige is a great choice. It doesn't stand out as much as fully white or fully brown. It's a neutral color that doesn't annoy or frustrate people, and it'll keep the value of your home intact if and when you ever decide to sell.

You'll also have to be careful around beige surfaces because they tend to stain easily, much like how white does.

Brown

Brown can come in many different shades. If you get a darker shade of brown, it can make a larger room look smaller. Brown works nicely if you have a lot of wood throughout your kitchen or home. It works nicely with different tones of whites in the kitchen, and depending on how dark of a shade of brown you use,  you might not have to worry about stains as much as some of the other lighter colors out there.

Selecting colors in a kitchen is always an exciting stage of the project. It means you're one step closer to being able to use your kitchen.
