ULTRASOUND COURSE

Ultrasound scanning is one of the most common and widely used diagnostic tools in the process of treating gynecology, obstetrics or infertility issues. It helps determine the etiology of an underlying gynec condition that might be the cause for multiple issues or symptoms in women.

 

What is ultrasound scanning?

 

Ultrasound, also known as ultrasonography or simply sonography, is an imaging technique that is non-invasive and uses sound waves of high frequency to generate real-time images or videos of the internal organs, associated tissues and other structures as warranted by the condition. It is usually prescribed a medical practitioner.

 

In a gynec setup, there are there are two types of ultrasound scans that are relevant - trans-abdominal scanning (TAS) and trans-vaginal scanning (TVS). In TAS, the probe is moved over the abdomen and in TVS, the probe is inserted into the vaginal cavity. Significance of TVS: It allows the doctor to

• Identify the health of the ovaries, uterus, endometrium, peritoneum, cervix and other pelvic structures

• Identify anomalies such as septate uterus, bicorneate uterus, endometriosis

• Identify cancers of ovaries, uterus and other pelvic organs

• Identify ectopic pregnancies

• Identify abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic infections, torsion of the ovaries

• Check the health of the fetus.

• Check the spine, brain, and hips of an unborn baby.

• To look for any congenital disorders of an unborn baby.

 

Being of such extreme significance in the practice of a gynecologist and fertility specialist, deep knowledge and proficiency is required will enhance the effectiveness of the treatment by the clinician. Most TVS scanning courses are based on patient-based hands-on and this has the limitation that the students only get to learn from what patients are available at the training centre on the day of the training. This severely limits the exposure and hands-on for the student. In addition, in such a typical training centre, students stand around the doctor who is performing the scan and "observe" the scanning process. They do not get to do it on their own. Even if they do it, it is for a limited time where they cannot repeat the scans as it inconveniences the patient a lot. The result of all this is that TVS scan training is always compromised and students tend to make a lot of mistakes in their regular practice before they learn. Many doctors also learn the wrong things and take a long time to unlearn and learn the right way of TVS scanning.

• Perform baseline scans and follicular monitoring scans for managing infertility treatment protocols

• Ensure ability to establish a diagnosis and act accordingly
