UGC NET JRF Preparation Strategy

Let us now come out of our gaming zone and get right into the topic of UGC NET Preparation Tips for 2021. Remember, it is not easy but it’s worth it.

Take a deep breath, tell yourself that you can do anything you want, and let us dive right into the next phase.

This section will help you to understand what to study, how much to study, and where to study from. I have also presented the information in an image format below for you to be able to visualise and retain it.

It has been designed keeping in mind two important aspects:

  1.  Your Academic Prowess
  2. Number of hours you can dedicate for your UGC NET Preparation

Let us understand some basic points so that you can go through the image successfully:

Academic Prowess

Your academic qualification has been used to classify you into one of the 2 categories:

  • Category 1: If you belong to the first category, you are “Above average in the Paper 1 exam” based on your experience of taking some relevant competitive exam such as CAT, Banking or other Government exams & you have “Average level of Knowledge relating to the Paper 2” which you have studied in your post-graduation.
  • Category 2: If you belong to the second category, you are “new to (below average in) both Paper 1 as well as Paper 2.”

Number of Hours of Preparation:

Another classification has been made, based on the number of hours you can dedicate consistently. The division of your total hourly commitment per day into hours spent on Paper 1 and on Paper 2 has been made in the image below. Students like you can fall into any one of the following categories. You can allocate:

  • < 3 hours/day
  • 3 to 6 hours/day
  • > 6 hours/day

You may also use this guide to create your own Personalised Preparation Strategy.

Please go through the following additional points for a better understanding of the below point:

1. Key aspects of Paper 1

  • Some topics such as Data Interpretation, Mathematical Reasoning & Quantitative Aptitude require a basic understanding of topics like Profit & Loss, Percentages, Ratio & Proportion as well as Fractions.
  • Some topics are purely conceptual topics such as Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Communication & Higher Education.
  • And finally, some topics are either factual or can be improved purely through practice such as Information & Communication Technology (ICT), People, and Environment & Higher Education.

2. Key aspects of Paper 2

  • Divide the 10 Subjects into 3 Parts Easy, Medium & Difficult based on your level of understanding of these subjects. Once you have divided you must spend time on them accordingly as mentioned in the image below.

This image has been made keeping in view the minimum time duration of 3 months for your UGC NET preparation 2021.

Having understood the above 2 points, let us now go through the image:

How to Prepare for UGC NET Exam (Steps):

If there’s any mantra to efficiently study for the UGC NET Exam or if you are looking for the right ‘UGC NET Preparation Tips for 2021’, then you might want to sift through the steps that I have written down below.

There are 7 steps for you to follow to know that you’re on the right path of studying for the exam.

Step 1: Thoroughly go through the UGC NET Exam syllabus and exam pattern. That way you’ll know the topics to study and the weightage of each topic.

Step 2: Take mock tests of Paper 1 & Paper 2 and identify your strong & weak areas to efficiently utilise the given time. Consider a score of less than 40% as weak.

Step 3: Divide the subjects into two parts- strong & weak sections. Be honest with yourself.

Step 4: The entire UGC NET preparation for 2021 is divided into 13 weeks (as shared in the preparation strategy pdf above). You have to pick up only 2 subjects at a time, 1 from Paper-1 and 1 from Paper-2.

Start with your strong subjects, since there are no sectional cut-offs, covering your strengths would save time and boost your Morale.

Step 5: Then work on strengthening your weak areas by referring to the best books for UGC NET, and solving as many previous year question papers as possible.

Step 6: For Current Affairs, which are asked in the topics of Paper 1 from People & Environment, ICT & Higher Education, I will be covering all of them in my sessions. However, it is always a good idea to read newspapers anyhow.

Step 7: I have explained the seemingly challenging topics of Data Interpretation & Quantitative aptitude in the most simplified manner in the courses that I have designed for you.
