Colorado Window Tinting Laws - Think Before You Tint

It's no doubt window tinting offers a lot of benefits - from temperature control to protection, and privacy. But it's not as easy as installing the window tint you want.

Just like other states, CO enacted the Colorado window tinting laws back in 1995, and they measure window tint in terms of VLT percentage, or visible light transmission percentage. VLT refers to the amount of light that is allowed to pass through the window tint film.

For example, when you say 75% VLT, it means that 75% of the light passes through the film which further means that the higher the VLT percentage, the lighter the film is.

Here are the Colorado window tinting laws you should know about:

LEGAL TINT LIMIT FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES:

Front Windshield: Only use non-reflective 70% VLT tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front-seat side windows: You can use up to 27% tint darkness
Back seat side windows: You can use up to 27% tint darkness
Rear window: You can use up to 27% tint darkness

LEGAL TINT LIMIT FOR MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES:

Front Windshield: Only use non-reflective 70% VLT tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front-seat side windows: You can use up to 27% tint darkness
Back seat side windows: You can use up to 27% tint darkness
Rear window: You can use up to 27% tint darkness

Now if your front side windows and windshield have over 70% VLT, the rear window and backside windows at the back of the driver may have any tint darkness.

But not all are required to follow the law especially if one's current medical situation allows an exemption to the rule. The Colorado window tinting laws allow you to tint your windows darker for medical purposes. However, no matter what your medical exemption is, you are not allowed to use a special tint.
