Woolen textiles in India have come into a unique position after economic liberalization in India in 1990. There are more than 50 woolen mills in the country. Many of them are located in Punjab and Amritsar serving as major centers. Other centers of the industry include Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jamnagar, Kanpur, and Srinagar. Indian woolen textiles have been developed in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jammu, and Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttaranchal, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Indian woolen textiles are well acclaimed for hand-woven carpets and apart from these are also used for making blankets, knitwear, garments, apparel, ready-made garments, etc. The Government of India has taken necessary steps for the development of woolen garments. India produces mostly coarse wool which is of wide use in the production of quality carpets and blankets. The best quality wool required for weaving yarn is produced in small quantities in Himachal Pradesh as well as in Jammu and Kashmir. The first woolen mill in the country was established in Kanpur in the year 1876. Quality wool is imported to meet the requirements of the woolen industry in India. This specialized industry manufactures woolen garments, weaving wool, and hosiery yarns. However, the import of wool is restricted due to some foreign exchange difficulties and imported wool often falls short of the actual requirement of the industry. Thus only a part of the installed capacity of the industry is being utilized. Sheep breeding farms are being established in some parts of Northwest India to improve quality and increase the quantity of wool. Positively the manufacture of carpet yarn has made significant progress over the past few decades on the paste as it is based entirely on indigenous wool. Indian handmade shawls and carpets are known all over the world for their rich design and texture. In addition, shawls, and carpets, India manufactures a wide variety of exquisite woolen garments, pullovers, cardigans, and blankets. Handlooms produce many types of woolen goods such as shawls, coatings, carpets, blankets, etc. These are made by almost every family in the hilly regions of the country. The modern woolen textile mill industry is mainly concentrated in only a few cities in India. This country produces quality woolen garments which are popular all over the world.
