All You Need to Know About Slit Lamp Imaging System

A slit lamp imaging system is used as a routine of an eye check-up as it checks the anterior part of the eyes like iris, lens, cornea, and retina. Also, it focuses on the vitreous gel which is the interior part of the eye. Through the special lenses, ophthalmologists check the posterior eye parts like the optic nerve, retina, and drainage part. Doctors use these slit lamps mainly to look for the following:

  • Cysts
  • Foreign particle
  • Ulcers
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetes
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Eye Drops before Examination

Before doctors begin the checking process, they put a few drops of eye solution in the eyes. They use a yellow dye which helps in detecting injuries in the cornea, abnormal tear formation, and so on. Thereafter, doctors use mydriatic drops to dilate the pupil for a clearer image of the inner eyes. Numbing drops are used lastly to remove any foreign product which may have gone in during the check-up. The slit lamps are more advanced and have new and improved features to check eye problems with accuracy.
