What is VPS?

A virtual private server (usually abbreviated as VPS) is a virtual server installed on a computer that provides computing resources for many different hosts at the same time. There are two operating systems to choose from: Linux and Windows. VPS can meet the specific needs of individual customers and be configured to run the server software and applications they need.

It is a customized, completely isolated environment that can be restarted independently at any time. The virtual private server also provides its own root access, memory, applications, configuration files etc. Running a VPS is like having a standalone server with a considerable level of control, at a fraction of the cost.

What is Linux VPS?

Linux VPS stands for a virtual private server running on a Linux system. VPS is a virtual server hosted on a physical server. If the server runs in a host computer’s memory, the server is virtual. The host computer can run multiple virtual servers. Meanwhile, Windows VPS stands for host’s computer which uses Windows technology. Although there are common basic functions between the two, there are differences as well and the operating system chosen will depend on the specific user and their preferences.

 1. Cost

First, we compare the costs of Windows and Linux VPS. Linux OS is free to use since Linux is an open source OS while licensing fees are needed for Windows VPS. Linux distribution would be a great choice if you have a more limited budget and do not have demanding requirements and functionalities need while Windows distribution can be subjected to more specialized task which comes with a higher price tag.

2. Technology Considerations (Technology which your website and business runs on)

If you are planning to use PHP for developing MySQL for your database, Linux is the best solution. It offers many different distribution options such as CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu among others. Windows VPS is more suitable for those who develop in classic ASP or ASP.NET, users can leverage the robust integration for these programming scripts which the Windows Environment offers. Same goes to person who have MS SQL database.

3. Ease of Use

Linux VPS can be managed via SSH which require more technical know-how and expertise to ensure that everything is set up and running properly. However, it's a very effective OS to manage your server. For Windows VPS, it is much more easier for beginner because it can be easier to manage thanks to its remote desktop with direct GUI access.

Wrap Up

In short, it depends on you to select which distribution you would like to deploy on your server. There are few specifications need to take note before choosing your VPS providerWindows may have higher cost and regular updates, but it offers broader support base and ccommodates more demanding requirements. Oppositely, Linux is an open source, budget friendly distribution good for simpler requirements but at the same time it requires technical knowledge.
